Xbox has announced today that they're changing how Xbox Cloud Gaming is incorporated as part of the Game Pass service, with time limits set to be implemented for all tiers from November onwards.
When we get to that point, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members will be limited to 15 hours of Xbox Cloud Gaming per-month, with Premium members getting 10 hours and Essential members getting 5 hours.
- Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours
- Game Pass Premium: 10 hours
- Game Pass Essential: 5 hours
Here's why Microsoft says this is a necessary change:
"We’re introducing this model because the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer. Moving to monthly limits allows us to keep offering the service while continuing to invest in its reliability and performance. We understand that for some players the practical result is a higher cost."
Team Xbox expects the change "to impact 4% of Game Pass subscribers" when it's rolled out in November, but they'll also provide ways to purchase additional playtime for those who want to extend their cloud hours.
This will also mark an opportunity for non-Xbox Game Pass members to try Xbox Cloud Gaming (seemingly alongside an ad-based free tier that's currently in testing), as the ability to buy time will become a possibility "for people who want occasional access to cloud gaming or do not want a recurring Game Pass subscription".
More details will be rolled out soon about "pricing, purchasing additional hours, eligible games, market availability, and how players can check their remaining time", and we assume a specific date in November will be announced soon too.
"Today, eligible Game Pass subscribers can stream without these monthly hour limits. We recognize that introducing limits is a meaningful change, particularly for players who regularly spend more time gaming through the cloud. We expect this upcoming change to impact 4% of Game Pass subscribers.
Once subscribers use their included hours, they will be able to purchase additional cloud playtime through the XBOX Store. Available hours, purchasing options, and cloud gaming features may vary by market. We’ll share pricing and further details before the changes take effect."
