At the moment, when it comes to Xbox Game Pass, we've got three options (or four if you count PC Game Pass) in the form of XGP Essential, Premium and Ultimate. You pay your money, and you get a specific set of benefits for each tier.
However, as part of trying to make Xbox Game Pass more "flexible" in the long-term (which is something that Xbox boss Asha Sharma reportedly told her employees recently), it's been suggested that customisable tiers for Game Pass are "on the cards", potentially taking the form of a "pick your own plan" scenario in the future.
This is coming from a report over at Windows Central:
"Microsoft sources tell me that the longer-term goal for Xbox Game Pass is to make it more flexible. A sort of "pick your own plan" formula for Xbox Game Pass is on the cards, essentially, where users can effectively decide what packages of content they want to see as part of their plan."
Theoretically, this could result in players being able to remove content like Fortnite Crew from their Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, or take away "day one" releases, or maybe even remove new first-party games and Xbox Cloud Gaming access in order to bring the price down. Perhaps Microsoft could find ways to add even more content to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for those who are willing to pay a bit extra as well — lots of possibilities here!
It sounds like this is something that's going to take time to fully implement though (if it actually goes ahead - plans can easily change!), and Sharma has already stated that making Game Pass "flexible" is something that "will take time to test and learn around".
Still, with future Call of Duty games no longer launching into Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on day one, it feels like Microsoft is taking the first step towards this kind of flexibility. As long as they find a solution that makes sense for everyone, it could end up being a great move from both a business and consumer standpoint, and one that allows Game Pass to become an even more integral part of Xbox's next-gen plans.
