It feels like every now and again, we hear from the folks behind the cancelled Xbox One exclusive Scalebound about how they still really want to make it happen, but this time there's a little bit of a different angle to it.
Phil Spencer was in charge when Scalebound got the chop in 2017, and now Asha Sharma is the new Xbox boss who has a lot of ideas of her own - so is there a chance that she might be interested in reviving the PlatinumGames title?
That remains to be seen, but speaking to Video Games Chronicle in a new interview, the now-CLOVERS Studio Head/Chief Game Designer Hideki Kamiya highlighted that he's still serious about wanting to work on Scalebound again, and the same goes for the company's President & CEO Kento Koyama.
This is something we talk about a lot in our interviews, but now Xbox has a new CEO and a new plan. Have you asked Asha Sharma yet if they’re up for reviving Scalebound?
Kamiya: Well, no, but now’s my opportunity to once again say that if they want to do it, let’s make it happen! Koyama is on board too. If you could include some footage [of Scalebound] in your article for Asha, that would be useful.
Kamiya highlighted that he's talked to quite a few people who worked on Scalebound recently, and that while it's unfortunate that it never saw the light of day, it's something he "very strongly desire[s]" to see through if possible.
"Of course, it’s very unfortunate that the project was unable to see the light of day ultimately, and that is something that even now I still very strongly desire to be able to see through if it’s all possible, and I’m being one hundred percent serious when I say that.
I mean, obviously we might not be in a position to do that right this second, but I strongly believe that if you want something strongly enough, you eventually find a way to make it happen."
Microsoft never really gave a proper explanation for why Scalebound was cancelled back in the day, but numerous PlatinumGames employees have suggested there were various problems with the project during development.
It's believed that Xbox still owns the IP for Scalebound in 2026, which means they could reach out to Kamiya and propose a revival if desired. That ball's in Asha Sharma's court though, and we reckon it's probably a long shot.
