Since Microsoft pulled funding for its unannounced game back in the summer, Romero Games has been trying to salvage the project for a future release - and now it sounds as though the DOOM co-creator has managed that feat, but not in the way you might expect.
Talking in a new poll at an event in Spain (via Eurogamer), John Romero revealed that this cancelled Xbox project has "survived", but that it's "been basically completely redesigned" - even though it still "incorporates a lot of the elements" that were present in the old version of the game.
Here's a little bit more from Romero on where the project is at right now:
"We're not starting at ground zero [...] We can take pieces out of and put into a brand new indie game. We have a lot of stuff we can put in the game. The design is completely different, but the team is very excited about the new design."
The Romero Games founder went on to say that this new iteration of the project is a "much smaller game" now - and yeah, in general, it sounds as though the team has retooled those old assets from the Xbox cancellation into something new and different that it's crafting moving forward.
