DOOM Co-Creator Has Funding Pulled For AAA Title, Seemingly By Xbox

At this point, we know that Microsoft's latest round of layoffs has affected lots of projects at Xbox's internal studios, but the casualties seemingly don't stop there. Romero Games, the studio being helmed by DOOM co-creator John Romero, has just had funding pulled on its next title "along with several other unannounced projects at other studios".

The team's official statement, which has been shared on social media, doesn't outright mention Xbox or Microsoft here - but it's all-but-confirmed that the Redmond firm was the company funding this project, especially with Romero Games' reference to cancellations at other studios. The team's next title was going to be a AAA FPS using Unreal Engine 5 as its core technology base.

Anyway, here's the full statement from Romero Games:

At the time of posting, we're not sure of the fate for this Romero Games project. We don't know who owns the IP or where this all leaves the development process right now, but we sincerely hope that the team can pick itself up and somehow continue to fund and develop this game by other means.

Microsoft & Xbox have yet to comment on this latest industry casualty, but the team has confirmed pretty much every other reported cancellation so far. We know that Rare's Everwild has been canned, the team's Perfect Dark reboot is no more, and internal studio The Initiative is also set to close its doors. More on those other Xbox cancellations below.
