With the Steam Machine being announced last week, there was a lot of discussion surrounding its potential price point and whether it could end up competing with the likes of Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo in the console department.
Digital Foundry mentioned how they hoped it could come in at around $399, but that seems pretty unlikely according to a video from Linus Tech Tips, which suggests that Valve seems to be aiming for a "PC" price with the new system.
Here's what Linus Tech Tips had to say about this, as transcribed by VGC:
"They did offer me one hint, though: they said that while they expect it to be very competitively priced with a PC, it will be priced like a PC, rather than like a console with games subsidising the upfront hardware purchase."
"They wouldn’t say why, but if I had to guess, I’d say it’s partially to avoid stepping on the margin opportunities of their potential partners for Steam games and Steam software, but also because they recognise that the Steam Machine is a full-fledged PC."
Historically, Xbox and PlayStation consoles have been subsidised in order to get as many systems in players' homes as possible, with the intent of making up those losses through software and subscriptions. Based on this comment, it sounds like Valve doesn't want to do the same thing, which would ultimately push up the cost.
It should be noted, however, that even Microsoft and Sony have been consistently raising the price of their latest systems in recent years, and there's a still a good chance the Steam Machine will cost around the same amount as a Series X or PS5. It doesn't sound like it's going to beat the Series S and Nintendo Switch 2, however.
We'll have to wait and see what happens, with the price set to be revealed relatively soon ahead of the Steam Machine's early 2026 launch, and in the meantime you can let us know what you think the price will be in the poll below.
