Everwild Screenshots Leak Online Several Months After Xbox Cancellation

Back in July, as part of broader layoffs at Microsoft, Rare's Everwild was cancelled after more than five years in the making - and now a selection of in-development screenshots have been shared online; giving us an idea of what the Sea Of Thieves developer was looking to build with its next game.

These images are coming by way of outlet MP1st, who found them "from the website of an artist who worked on the game" - and they're apparently "from a version relatively close to its cancellation". Here are a selection of those screenshots, showcasing gameplay and several UI elements:

These provide us with a pretty interesting look at Everwild and what Rare was going for prior to the game's cancellation - we saw so little on the title that this is probably the most 'game' we've ever seen from the project. The UI reminds us a little bit of modern Zelda, although we were led to believe the experience would be more of a survival game with shades of Viva Pinata as much as anything else.

Shortly after the game was ultimately cancelled earlier this year, Rare addressed how the move "rippled through the studio", also mentioning it that it was re-evaluating its whole development process for future projects. It's a shame that Everwild never came to be, but here's hoping the studio can take those learnings into future titles.

You can see some larger versions of these screenshots (again, shared via MP1st) down below:
