Xbox's Everwild Reportedly Cancelled As Layoffs Hit Sea Of Thieves Developer

Update []: Xbox's Matt Booty has now confirmed that Everwild has been cancelled.

Original Story: We told you folks to brace yourselves today and that's exactly what's needed. Following news earlier that fresh Microsoft layoffs were starting to hit Xbox teams, it's being reported that Rare is now one of the studios affected - and its Everwild project has seemingly been cancelled as a result.

This is coming from outlet VGC, which says that "people with knowledge of the project" have now been informed of its cancellation. Announced way back at Microsoft's X019 showcase in London, Everwild was supposed to be a shared world experience that built on the foundations laid down by 2018's Sea Of Thieves. It will reportedly no longer see the light of day.

As for the scale of job losses over at the UK studio, that's not quite as clear right now. VGC simply says that "employees are likely to lose their jobs as part of broader restructuring" at Rare, with Microsoft yet to speak about the news or respond to the outlet's request for comment.

The last we heard on Everwild was that development was picking up after a project restart somewhere along the line, but looking at this report, it seemingly wasn't progressing well enough for Microsoft's taste. We'll continue to bring news of these Xbox layoffs and restructuring efforts as we get more detail on their exact nature.

Sad to see Rare's next game get cancelled like this? Tell us what you make of this report down in the comments.
