Topic: setting up new user

hi,so on my sons xbox series x i wanted to set up an account for myself.
so i use my microsoft email,then i get the screen sign in or create an account,go to microsoft.com/link
i do this on my pc type in the code,it sends a code to my email which i then proceed to type said code in
it says u are now signed into xbox
but on the xbox nothing happens, that page with the code is still there
if i click use controller instead i get blank page with spinning circle
i have tried it numerous times and same result
why oh why can things never be easy
anyone any suggestions?
