Topic: How long do games last on the Game Pass?

Hi, I've just bought an Xbox X, as the title suggests. Is there a way to know how long a game will be on the Game Pass? If not, will it get announced shortly before? How long do games typically stay on there for?

It all depends on the game. Some stay for a year or long others for a few months.

@Kevillini yep, as others have said, a year is a safe bet for any game that isn't by Rockstar or Microsoft. Rockstar games are normally between 3 and 6 months and Microsoft games are more or less indefinite.

I think there is a list on Reddit or something that will tell you when a game joined game pass so you can at least somewhat plan ahead.

The gamepass app normally tells you what games are leaving about 2 weeks before they leave. Unfortunately that doesn't leave much time to play a 100 hour game but probably enough for some shorter titles. I normally try and play longer games as soon as I get the time because of this.

Would be good if MS gave definitive dates but unfortunately they don't.

I hope you enjoy your new Xbox anyway!

See ya!

@ralphdibny Thanks for the shout on the reddit list. Didn't know that one existed. Found it under the xboxgamepass reddit as one of the community megathread. The time it is on gamepass seems to differ a lot. There are 3rd party games that have been on the service for 5 years there are also games that leave in a year.

I agree with the better communication about leave date of games. I've been holding off to playing Dragon Quest 11, seeing it is such a long game and im afraid it will leave gamepass once i start it. So as you say i generally start shorter games on the service and wait with the Ms/Bethesda games i have yet to play until i played the 3rd party stuff that i want to play

It's better to prioritise third-party games because they leave eventually. @Lavalera Dragon Quest XI is 100% worth buying anyway.

@Lavalera no worries! It's all a bit of guess work really but that Reddit page can at least help us make an educated guess. I recently played through Yakuza 4-7 (all very long games) because they were nearing a year on GP. The anniversary for 4&5 and then subsequently 6 came and went though and they are still on the service! I'm glad I've played them anyway, trying to fit any long game like that around a 9-5 especially if there is an impending time limit is just a nightmare

@Banjo- Dq 11 is on my wishlist for a while so I might end up buying it anyways when it's on a 50% sale.

@ralphdibny I also played through yakuza games on gamepass except for 7. I bought Lad around the time I got my new Xbox and I was searching for new games to play. And seeing 0, k1 and k2 were also on gamepass and it was supposed to be a good entry point for the series I decided to just buy it since I had a feeling the rest would come to the service as well. Glad I decided to buy Lad, it made we fell in love with the series. Even though didn't know some guest star appearances, the new story made it easy to follow.

After eventually playing all 8 and both judgment games, I even got lost judgment day 1, it became my favorite game series ever. Even though not all of the games are the same quality I do love them all. I only have fist of the north star to go now seeing as the older spinoffs can't be played unless you have older ps consoles that will be the last one. Or at least binary domain is also a RGG game but it's a shooter so don't know if I'm going to count that.

I'm starting to use gamepass and ps plus extra in a while a bit more as a try before you buy service. Mostly trying games I wouldn't buy anyways since they aren't my type of games normally or I'm doubting if I like it. For me that's the biggest charm of these services. Like I bought all yakuza games, shadow of mordor to name a few and got to try out forza 5 and hades while I normally would never buy a racer or a rogue like.
But yeah as you say fitting the long games around a busy life can be tough and that's one of the downsides of it if you wanna play a game and it is about to leave it will leave some form of stress to finish it in time.

@Lavalera I also use Game Pass like that. Actually, I bought several Yakuza games in a digital sale but I haven't played any yet. They look like real fun.

@Banjo- I can't recommend playing them enough. The stories in them are great and they tackle a lot of social problems, especially in Japan, like the idol industry, gang life, bullies etc etc. They are a Rollercoaster of emotions, sometimes you are laughing so loud because of some absurd joke and the other moment you are almost crying because of a sad moment. There is also a lot of side content to do, from karaoke to darts, from shogi to management Sim games and more. So yeah if you are up for it start with 0 which is technically the first one and also one of the best ones

@Lavalera Yes, I will start with Zero. I think that I'll like them and they are cheap on sales so they feel like good value.
