In terms of power, the next gen doesn't need much more. Enough to make stable 4k60 a reality. Probably with RT.
But the real improvement will be in the addition and integration of Cloud, AI and ML based systems. Much of this won't be visible to the gamer but could, and should, make games quicker, easier and cheaper to develop.
Acquisition rumours have been with us a long time. Someday, one will come true.
However, as regards to this specific....MS would need to buy several large publishers before monopoly lawyers would need to be involved. The gaming industry is large and diverse with most developers free to move beween publishers as they see fit.
If this were to be taken seriously, then we'd be looking at Valve...or more specifically Steam.
That might create enough of a monopolistic concern.
However, if it were simply hyperbole, then it is possibly referring to the rumoured takeover of T2I. A big publisher, but one that isn't a great fit for MS. Huge benefits, but offset by big problems.
If we are looking at studios and publishers that MS "needs"....as in fills gaps in its developer and gaming assets...then we are talking about WBIE (family friendly dev, fighting dev, comic book dev), followed by Sega or Square or Konami (Japanese and JRPG dev), both of which fill gaps but neither of which would invoke monopolistic concerns.
And if we are talking about what MicroSoft wants...Asobo, Moon, NRS, Monolith, IoI, Remedy, and more spring to mind
What I want is for GwG to be exciting, anticipated and relevant. That doesn't mean giving away AAA games...not least because so many people already own them.
But it could mean handing out those missed gems, those games which in hindsight were "must haves" but, for whatever reason didn't sell well.
And...IMO...of the 4 titles released every month, 1 should be XBO and one should be 360.
Of the games themselves...they are free. They don't need to provide 100 hours of entertainment and they don't need to be for everyone. But they also shouldn't be duds.
What games would I like?
MechAssault 1 and 2, with DLC Enslaved Lost Odyssey Blue Planet Max Payne
Psychonauts and Blinx are coming to GamePass, but a possibility.
But there are other games...how about Murakumo or BattleStar Galactica on the XBO? Quantum RedShift or Red Dead Revolver? Lollipop Chainsaw or Forza 3 with the HotWheels DLC? Command and Conquer or Eternal Sonata or Alpha Protocol or Deathsmiles or Amalur or just so many choices
Games that are fun, but not necessarily top rated or to everyone's taste.

Totally NOT worth the price increase.
This should have been an optional add-on.

Its marketing speak.
But with a kernal of truth.
