It's been around six months since we last talked about Insignia — the unofficial replacement service for Xbox Live on the original Xbox — and that's mainly because it stopped growing its list of supported games for quite a while.
In recent days though, the team have suddenly become very active in adding lots of new games to the list, including Burnout 3: Takedown, Delta Force Black Hawk Down, MTX Motorax, NFL Blitz: The League, Monster Garage, NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup, NCAA Football 2005, Bicycle Casino, Robotech: Invasion, Madden NFL 2005, Gotcha! and NHL 2005. There's likely a lot more to come in the days and weeks ahead as well.
Here's just one of the updates that was shared about this recently:
Just to explain for anyone who doesn't understand, Insignia brings back online multiplayer (and leaderboard) functionality for the original Xbox alone. It can't be used on modern consoles like the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and it has no affiliation with Microsoft whatsoever.
You have to jump through a few hoops to actually use it as well, which includes running a one-time exploit on your console (which is up to you, but it's at your own risk), so it's certainly not for everyone. The service has about 35,000 users overall, but only a few handfuls are usually online at one time.
Still, we've always been in awe of what the Insignia team have built here, preserving multiplayer access for games that were shut down decades ago in some cases. With Xbox making a push towards backwards compability on PC and adding achievements to original Xbox games, we'd absolutely love to see them teaming up with Insignia to bring back multiplayer access in an official capacity.
