Xbox fans appear to be sick to their back teeth over mass layoffs and studio closures, with a shout to "stop the cycle of layoffs" becoming the most trending topic on Microsoft's newly-launched feedback site, Xbox Player Voice.
The feeling is all too commonplace at the moment, of doom and gloom skulking around Xbox as its attempts to reset itself for the 'greater good'. Horrid.
We share in that frustration too, dreading reports of job cuts across Xbox Game Studios, and wishing for things to be better.
Xbox fan, Witt Yao posted a strong message to Player Voice stating "this can not continue", and it looks to be gaining serious traction with over 3,400 upvotes and nearly 700 comments at the time of writing.
In the post Yao states:
"The layoff of 3,200 workers at XBOX (across Activision, Bethesda/ZeniMax, Blizzard, King, Mojang, Obsidian, id Software, and XBOX Game Studios) is unacceptable. This continues a pattern that has led to 10,000+ layoffs at XBOX in as little as two years. Multiple studios have been closed or had their futures jeopardized (Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Undead Labs, Ninja Theory, Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin, Alpha Dog Games, and Roundhouse Studios) and numerous games have been cancelled. The developers and players agree that This Can Not Continue."

They go on to demand what "a true reset that meets the needs of the XBOX community looks like", listing six key points.
These are:
- Transparency for Players - Showcasing games from studios they intend to sell or close weeks later feels bad for players.
- Keep Teams Together - No layoffs for the next 2 years and end studio closures. Studio closures hurt the fans of that studio.
- XBOX is already profitable without reaching a billion people every day - Stop constraining XBOX by the unrealistic profit expectations of the Microsoft Accountability Margin.
- Trust the Developers - Negotiate in good faith with unions and developers, so they can better represent the needs of both developers and gamers.
- Layoffs are a Failure of Leadership - No executive bonuses when there is a layoff.
- Invest in the Future of Gaming - Invest in the future generation of video game developers instead of unpopular technologies like AI that players don’t want. Game development expertise is the biggest asset of a video game company.
Commenters on the post claim Xbox leadership "should be ashamed of themselves" whilst others criticise Microsoft for not knowing "its greatest asset is the people who create the software".
It's worth noting that, so far at least, none of the Xbox Game Studios targeted by Microsoft in these latest layoffs have actually shuttered their doors. Compulsion Games and Double Fine negotiated their independence from Xbox, Ninja Theory and Undead labs continue to work on their current projects under new ownership, whilst Arkane is still sorting things out.
As for Yao's point on unwanted AI, just last month Xbox boss Asha Sharma made the call to cancel Microsoft's "Gaming Copilot" integration on console, commenting:
"My job is to think about where we invest, what we prioritise and how we operate. Our console players aren't excited about that experience in their console."
