Update []:
Halo Studios has now updated their FAQ with an explanation that the PlayStation Plus bit was a mistake.
Not so bad after all!
Original Story:
Looking around the world of Xbox today, the topic that seems to be trending the most is in regards to Halo: Campaign Evolved and its requirements for co-op - something that was detailed by Halo Waypoint in a Q&A last night.
For anyone on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, it's mostly self-explanatory. If you want to play online co-op, you'll naturally need an Xbox account and some form of Xbox Game Pass subscription. You'll also need two Xbox accounts if you play offline co-op though, so just keep that in mind before you dive in with a friend for some split-screen.
If you're wondering whether you can use a Guest account for P2 instead, it's not confirmed either way here:
XBOX Series X|S: If you’re playing split-screen on an XBOX console, the second player will also need a unique Microsoft account. If you want to play online co-op, you will need an active XBOX Game Pass subscription.
What's particularly weird is that if you're playing Halo: Campaign Evolved on PS5, both accounts will need a PlayStation Plus subscription regardless of whether you're playing offline or online. A lot of flak is being sent Xbox's way for this, but we're assuming it's more of a PlayStation decision than anything... or perhaps some kind of weird quirk with the way Xbox accounts function on PS5.
In any case, here's the official wording on it:
PlayStation 5®: If you’re playing split-screen on PlayStation 5®, both accounts will need to have PlayStation Plus and be linked to a Microsoft account. Having these active PlayStation Plus subscriptions will also provide access to online co-op play.
The Steam version on PC also requires an Xbox account in order to access any form of co-op play.
This FAQ is well worth reading if you want to check out more commonly-asked questions about Halo: Campaign Evolved, as it delves into topics such as the sell out of Collector's Editions (unfortunately no more are planned), the ability to access the prequel missions immediately as you begin the game, how the new third-person mode will work, and how there unfortunately won't be a demo prior to launch in late July.
It also goes into more detail about co-op is balanced, including the introduction of a new Difficulty Modifiers feature:
And, since not everyone in your Co-Op session will be at the same skill level, we’ve also introduced a new feature – Difficulty Modifiers – to help everyone enjoy their time together. Difficulty Modifiers allow each player to adjust settings for themselves, which can help them have an easier time or a more difficult challenge.
Go and check that out on Halo Waypoint, and let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
