It was only yesterday that we were talking about how much value backwards compatibility still brings to the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in 2025, and I've personally really missed being able to play those games on the ROG Xbox Ally.
Well, it sounds like Team Xbox "hopes" to bring those classic original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles over from console to PC at some point in the future. This is according to the often-cited leaker NateTheHate (otherwise known as NateDrake) on ResetEra, who advised that Xbox is making an effort to try and turn it into a reality.
"There exists a hope to make legacy Xbox (OG and Xbox 360) games BC on ROG and Windows. Whether they succeed is the unknown; but there is an effort being made. The other unknown would be how extensive will the initiative be in offerings. Will it be what we currently have on Series or will BC expand to add more titles across the Xbox ecosystem."
Now, you may remember a report that did the rounds back in June about an "Xbox Classics" program that would bring these titles to PC as part of an "advanced emulation platform" in partnership with the Xbox Xenia team. However, this ended up being denied by Xenia, and Windows Central's Jez Corden advised that particular scenario wasn't in the plans.
Jez did mention at the time how Xbox wanted to bring more games to more places though, and we're sure Team Xbox wants to put as many titles on PC as possible, especially with the ROG Xbox Ally now on the market. The big question is how difficult it's proving and whether it makes sense to pursue the idea, and perhaps it's going to be a while until that decision is fully nailed down.
With the Xbox's 25th anniversary on the horizon, there's always hope for some backwards compatibility news in 2026, and Xbox exec Jason Ronald potentially teased as such in an interview earlier this week. We'll just have to wait and see whether it comes to fruition or not.
