We've been hearing quite a lot about the next Xbox console in recent months, and even about the PS6 a little bit as well, but Sony executive Lin Tao has advised that the PS5 is still only in the "middle" of its journey as things stand.
Tao mentioned earlier today how there are "many active users enjoying the console", and therefore Sony plans to actually expand the PS5 further in years to come. The "middle of its journey" would suggest it's expected to last until around 2030.
Here's a clip of what Tao said, translated into English:
Now of course, Tao didn't say anything about Xbox here because there's no reason to, but it seems unlikely Xbox will just give up on the Series X|S in years to come - the Xbox One is still getting support and received new first-party releases for 10 years altogether. Plus, it's not a great look to ditch support if the PS5 continues to receive it.
That said, it does feel like Microsoft wants to start focusing on the next Xbox console now, which is expected to include some kind of PC integration that accommodates the likes of Steam and the Epic Games Store. The big question is how much crossover there'll be from the Series X and S to the next system, and that might end up dictating how long their lifespans prove to be. We'll have to wait and see what happens!
