Sony and AMD have shared a new video today discussing "the Future of Play" for the two companies, and while the video naturally focuses on PlayStation and building towards the PS6, these tech advancements being made will benefit developers on "every gaming platform" according to the AMD representative.
The start of the chat — which we've thrown up above — talks largely about 'Project Amethyst' and the work that's being done on AI upscaling and ray-tracing - which of course began rolling out with PS5 Pro last year. However, towards the end of the chat some more general goals were laid out, including talk from AMD about this partnership benefitting the wider gaming ecosystem.
Sony's Mark Cerny: "I'm really looking forward to what improvements Universal Compression will bring, and to what degree the effective bandwidth of the GPU will exceed its paper spec. There's a multitude of benefits from this, including lower power consumption, higher fidelity assets [...] Overall, it's of course still very early days for these technologies — they only exist in simulation right now — but the results are quite promising, and I'm really excited about bringing them to a future console in a few years' time.
AMD’s Jack Huynh: "We feel the same way, Mark, and we're so excited to bring these innovations to developers across every gaming platform. Because this isn't just about silicon, it's about empowering the creators and communities that make gaming what it is. And we're just getting started, as we continue building with close partners like Sony, everything we're doing is focused on one thing: pushing games forward for all of you.
As we covered here at Pure Xbox a few months ago, Microsoft and AMD are also working closely to "push the boundaries of what's possible" with next-gen, and there will surely be some crossover with the tech that's being worked on with Sony as well. The PS5 and Xbox Series X turned in quite similar spec this generation, and we'll have to wait and see how PS6 and the next Xbox fare in that regard.
Of course, whilst Microsoft and AMD have committed to next-gen Xbox plans, the exact nature of Team Green's next console could look quite different. As the ROG Xbox Ally nears release, the lines between PC and Xbox are blurring, but either way - AMD partnered next-gen tech seems to be on the horizon for both Sony and Microsoft in a few years' time.
