Square Enix Confirms That Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth & Part 3 Are Coming To Xbox

As it has been pointed out on Push Sqaure by many people, where does it say anywhere releasing the same time on NS2 and Xbox for Part III?

Just that the trilogy is coming to NS2/Xbox, still got to get Rebirth on those. And then Part III could be timed for 6 months for PS5/PC, then come to NS2/Xbox the statement from Square would still be true

Well, color me surprised. I expected Square Enix to have some PlayStation exclusivity deal for the whole remake trilogy signed, before they decide to release their games multiplatform. Though the wording in the Twitter message is very awkward, as they don't mention a simultaneous release.

Now I wonder how successful they will be in convincing players on Nintendo and Xbox to buy the remake games. 🤔

Seems that PS exclusivity didn't work too well for Squenix. 🤣

@masofdas If there was an exclusivity deal for the third FF7 Remake installment, they wouldn't be announcing Xbox, PC, and Switch 2 ports of the game beforehand. That defeats the entire purpose of making it PS-exclusive in the first place.

@TrollOfWar They never had a deal for the entire trilogy, that was something that people on the internet made up for some reason.

If there was an exclusivity deal for the entire trilogy, it would have made no sense for FF7 Remake and FF7 Rebirth to have exclusivity deals with different lengths. Remake was a 1-year exclusive (with Intergrade being exclusive for an extra 3 or so months), while Rebirth was a 3-month exclusive.

As this is a company that said Tomb Raider flopped by selling 8m and still getting two more games

@Questionable_Duck I don't know what the internet made up, it was just my expectation that there might still be some contract between Square Enix and Sony for the exclusivity of the entire trilogy. The Final Fantasy 7 Remake has been in planing since that PS3 launch demo, so I was expecting some contract to cover the whole project.

But I am happy for all players. Better late than never. 😉

Thankfully 3rd party (and 1st party) publishers are seeing how badly exclusives are harming their IP. Multiplatform is the future.

@masofdas I think SE has said multiple times now that they are no longer pursuing exclusivity, and the fact that they omitted an announcement of exclusivity here (as well as Sony) is telling enough on its own.

@Kaloudz yeah why super curious where Square goes as company, as one year I played like 32 games just from them and almost everyone was considered a flop

And I just can't see a Final Fantasy doing 10m+ this day & age

Especially when compared to Capcom, SEGA and even Konami at the moment of what Square does

@masofdas After seeing the success of Baldur's Gate 3 and Elden Ring, I believe Final Fantasy could as well do 10m+ sold units, but a lot of factors would need to fall in place, one of them being a multi-platform release.

It would need to be fresh and bold, a completely new gripping, immersive story without any previous baggage. It needs to exceed the trends of the moment it releases and needs to build up a positive hype like never before.

It's not an easy task, but smaller dev teams managed to achieve that.

Gaming landscape changing as well you'd think for XVII be PS6 then will that be to costly for people to buy, NeXt-Box more of a PC would people just buy it off steam, could it be a cross-gen title and so on

Any game (part from Nintendo) has to be on PC right away now, that's where the gaming audince seems to be going.

It’s too late anyway… Sony already got what they wanted: damaging the Xbox brand for good and made people believe the franchise was a first party exclusive. They don’t even need to lock anything down anymore.

At least, Sony will probably stop locking stuff now that everyone is convinced that Xbox is a brand to avoid 🌝

@Sindayl I am also curious to know if Sony's exclusivity deals are less lucrative than what they used to be. It was leaked a few years ago that for the Rise of the Tomb Raider's 1-year exclusivity, Microsoft paid $ 100 million (that's a budget which could fund an entire game) and I can imagine that Sony might have paid similar figures for certain deals. Usually these deals would cover the "lost sales" from the other platforms. Now that Xbox console are less relevant and not competing with PlayStation anymore, how much is Sony/PlayStation willing to pay to keep games off Xbox?

@TrollOfWar Mmm I wonder how much Sony really had/has to pay because locking a game away from Xbox must cost way less than locking it away from PS since there are simply fewer sales to compensate for.

This is biggest news than you think. Some people were expecting to play the complete trilogy on Xbox after another long period of timed exclusivity. Square Enix weren't joking about becoming fully multiplatform. It also seems to be Play Anywhere, judging by the "Xbox on PC" nomenclature.

@Questionable_Duck Exactly. Part of the exclusivity deals is not announcing the platforms that will get the game afterwards. It's been like that with every timed-exclusive Final Fantasy game. However, it wouldn't surprise me to see the Switch 2 version coming later like most third-party games, for technical reasons.

While I am not a fan of these remakes this good news for Xbox folks who are.

I had a quick look at this article on Push Square and the comments make me sad for gaming with how incredibly selfish some of the comments are. I guess I shouldn't be surprised as that is gaming these days but yeah I am still sad & disappointed.

Hopefully will be PlayAnywhere like part 1.

@Millionski yeah and not being an a$$ here but see from reports ect games don't sell well on Xbox, and other things mentioned here like cost of paying for exclusive by Sony would that out weigh the numbers the game would do on Xbox (I think it will do great on NS2 especially in Japan) but as @Sindayl said has damage been done to brand that Sony don't need to then with all these systems being so similar now & stuff like DLSS that dev costs aren't high that worth putting time in as you say 5m SteamDeck.

And Push Square which @rivergenie brings up that yes maybe I'm part of, but that was more of the wording from the article & what might or might not be and to me then the games being on all systems. Then t's more about Square as big fan and how they always talk about everything being a flop, on how going forward if games on everything what will the excuse be going forward when X only does a few million (which compared to other games be a decent number, I look at Capcom) but they wanted 10m+ for reasons

@masofdas it's implied because when timed exclusivity exists, the developer almost never talks about rival platforms until that agreement is over. Yes their language makes it possible but it would be a weird one.

I do think articles saying it's confirmed are jumping the gun, even though it's most likely the case

For ps and pc it’s kind of like 8 year of early access with 2 prices tag so far, once the final releases a 3rd pride tag. Oh then there will be the inevitable directors cut with all 3 games at some absolute crazy price. End of the day until the remaster we’ve paid 3/4 times to play then replay final fantasy 7 remake. What a marketing strategy.

@Mincey0 What I don't get is why some users on Push say that nobody would want to play it on Xbox now, when I think it's the opposite: when the three games are so close of each other and a bundle is on the horizon, paying and playing makes more sense than paying several times and playing chapters for eight years. But hey, it's the same people that claim that Final Fantasy XVI sold 22,000 copies on Xbox.

@Millionski I don't see why Alinea Analytics, Circana, GFK and others would lie about numbers, and they post good numbers like Helldivers what 900k last we heard, not just Mafia Old Country did 100k on Xbox.

Though I will say I do some release things a few places and have seen LAD Pirate Yakuza, Cronos The New Dawn, Ninja Gaiden Ragebound skip physical on Xbox but of course still available digitally and then brings up a whole different thing of Digital v Physical but still must be a reason skipping, though the Series S most of the current Xbox I would think from data we do have.

@Banjo- that was me with the 22k for FFXVI on Push (have never said people won't play VII on Xbox though do think most be on NS2) as I said above to @millionski that's the number touted by Alinea Analytics which could be wrong, till otherwise the only number we have but as @TrollOfWar has said a few factors maybe why shadowdrop, price, same time as Expedtion 33 etc

@masofdas You are not the only one using that number and yes, there are more realistic estimates. Thing is, Microsoft and Sony don't usually reveal sale numbers unless they have something to celebrate, and Microsoft in particular use numbers of players as they also include Game Pass players (that also pay to play the included games) like @themightyant points out.

I think it's fair to say Xbox sales are generally healthy reading clues provided by third-party publishers (financial reports, tweets, platform support...) and just not try to guess the exact number, unless the information comes from the publisher, because estimates differ massively one from another and, in that case, the calculation method is ridiculous. 😁

That said, instead of a fully priced shadow drop like XVI, they should do like they did on PC and offer a 30% discount for pre-orders when they release Rebirth and Remake on Xbox or anything to give it a boost and make up for the late release, as they also did when they released the Pixel Remaster bundle on Xbox.

@Banjo- yeah seen Gears R has over 1m players, but again one of those number sites well it only sold 295k on PS5 but then have Forza Horizon 5 number of 3.5m on PS5 also the breakdown of Mafia Old Country numbers but as you could be wrong how that 1.2m broken down between PS5, Xbox & PC.

Seen Remake is £40 on the eShop and comes with OG VII, which seems pretty good price seeing Nintendo want £34 per Wii game

Edit will say "IF" XVI was 22k at £50 per sell that's £1.1m, like how much would it really cost to port from PS5/PC seeing all this hardware pretty similar then take away marketing like Ben Starr sat on Xbox trailer, likely still a good chuck of money made.

@masofdas Anything is an excellent deal compared to Nintendo's. They basically rip their fans off.

@Banjo- I going to have to take out a second mortgage (haven't got a first yet) to buy all the Nintendo things, and unlike the others only place to get the games at least at worse I could wait a year for Ghost of Yotei to come to PC.

@masofdas The alternatives are buying and selling physical Nintendo games which is what I usually do, wait for a good deal somewhere... It's not that I can't afford it, but I'm reluctant to spend so much on Nintendo these days, and it's not like everything they make are masterpieces, despite reviewers overrating their games, or that I don't have a backlog like everyone else... Besides, I'd rather play older Nintendo games because I consider them better, with very few exceptions. But yeah, paying a premium subscription to play the same games I already have and paying twice as much to play a Wii game on Switch compared to Wii U is insane... the outrage on NL is not surprising at all.

@themightyant Thanks for adding more context. It's all good if Sony/PlayStation helped make the Remake possible in the first place. Without them Death Stranding also wouldn't exist.

The baffling thing about FF7 Remake is how it was known from the beginning that it's only time-exclusive to PlayStation, but it never released on anything other than PC. It's weird. But Square Enix is known for doing weird business decisions (like releasing Octopath Traveler 1 on Xbox but not PS and Octopath Traveler 2 on PS but not Xbox, and releasing Kingdom Hearts 3 on Xbox and KH 1&2 only a year later).

Sorry to disappoint you, but the preorder page is up on the Xbox store and there's no discount. It's the same price as on PSN.

@Banjo- Yes, but the challenge I see is that most people will choose to wait for a discount rather than paying the standard price, as they already waited 5 years. So be prepared for initial sales to "not meet the expectations". 😉

For whatever reason, you cannot preorder the standard edition on Xbox af the moment, which is $39.99 on PSN. I assume most people on Xbox and Switch already own the original FF7, so they would prefer the standard rather than the Digital Deluxe Edition.

@TrollOfWar The two editions are available for pre-order now. They both are limited early purchase editions and include the original game. The only difference is the Square Enix Digital Content Viewer of the Digital Deluxe Edition. The prices are £40/€50/$40 for Standard and £55/€70/$60 for Digital Deluxe.

Good, who knows if day one but at least generally a confirmation is great for every platform. Let's just hope by 2027 on any platform.

Good for square looking for more sales on other consoles but I think they may be missing the point that this franchise isn’t as popular as it once was or they think it is.

Their expectations always seem way too high.

Bout dam time. Square been smoking something real strong to avoid making tens of millions on a very popular platform. Like they took way too much acid or something. Its all been excuses, even down to "Oh its because we're loyal to Japanes fans." No...just no. You're loyal only to money, and you must've HIGH AF not seeing the money that's right there for the taking.

This is a good thing. Exclusives are important as they are the major differentiating factor between consoles. Home-grown exclusives made by the console manufactures own studios that is. However, 3rd party or timed exclusivity should NOT be a thing. If you're a multiplatform publisher, your game should release on EVERY platform that can run your game, and if you asked ANY multiplatform developer's opinion on this 9/10 of them would share the same sentiment.
