We're now almost five years into the Xbox Series X|S generation, which means in normal times we'd be well on the way to getting excited about next-gen hardware. However, this gen has played out a little differently, and we're not the only ones that struggle to see what an Xbox Series X successor could really bring to the table.
Speaking in a new interview (via our friends at Push Square), Final Fantasy 14 boss Naoki Yoshida was asked about whether Square Enix's Final Fantasy MMO would end up on next-gen consoles when they arrive. Yoshida said "we would work on those platforms" if they launched, before going on to add that they "feel that there's no real need to make new hardware" right now.
"When I look at things from a gamer’s perspective, I feel that there's no real need to make new hardware, because I think right now people are happy with the Xbox Series X, the PS5 or the Switch 2. And honestly, from a gamer’s perspective as well, hardware is just expensive to buy."
In a time where Microsoft has recently raised its Xbox Series X|S console prices — with Sony just joining them as well — we can definitely see where Yoshida is coming from. Consoles like the Xbox Series X are currently more money than they were at launch almost five years ago - and we just don't see how a next-gen console will be affordable and a generational leap in the near future.
Still, that doesn't mean we're not excited about new Xbox hardware. Something like the ROG Xbox Ally provides a totally different experience than what's currently on the market from Xbox - and here at PX HQ, we're more than happy for that system to launch and have its time in the spotlight before we start thinking about the next home console.
