PlayStation Is Publishing Helldivers 2 On Xbox, Signalling A Shift In Strategy From Sony

We got some big news today in the form of Helldivers 2 making its way over to Xbox; a super well-regarded multiplayer shooter from the folks over at Arrowhead Game Studios. In isolation this is big news, but with extra context this is massive news - as it's the first-ever PlayStation Publishing release to launch on Xbox.

Yep, while the Sony-developed MLB The Show has appeared on Xbox multiple times, that version of the game was published by a different team - not too dissimilar to something like Death Stranding Director's Cut. With Helldivers 2 though, this is a very different beast, as PlayStation itself is working to fund and publish the Xbox version of the title. This is totally unexpected news to us, and could be a great sign for Xbox fans in the future.

While we wouldn't say that this game in particular will open the floodgates for PlayStation exclusives on Xbox, it at least shows that Sony is willing to work with Microsoft to get select games on the platform. It did a similar thing with Nintendo last year in LEGO Horizon Adventures, and clearly, Sony deems Helldivers 2 the perfect opportunity to start working with Xbox. We're pleased to see the ball finally rolling, folks.

As for what's next? Well, looking at the nature of Helldivers 2, it's probably safe to assume that Sony is at least considering future live service titles being released on Xbox. We have the shrouded-in-mystery Fairgame$ in development over there that would probably fit the bill, and we wouldn't be surprised to see that one get an Xbox version. Whether that would be at launch or further down the line remains to be seen, but after the failure of Concord, you'd assume the PlayStation team wants to give Fairgame$ the best shot it can by releasing on as many platforms as possible.

Anyway, while we're not counting our chickens in regards to more PS games on Xbox just yet, the upcoming Helldivers 2 port — being released by PlayStation Publishing LLC — is a big step in the right direction, and we'll be all-too happy to hop into this one here on Xbox in August 2025.
