It's clear that support for Day 1 releases on Game Pass remains very strong, for now...
With Level 5 dropping Xbox support after only publishing 2 games. Bloom walker softens the blow for me
I really like the look of Raji: Kaliyuga, but I still need to play the first game. I did buy it when it first came out, but never got round to playing it.
Other than that, (and whilst not all videos are available) there is not a lot for me there...
@Gabrie I noticed that too, but in this presentation that is third party games. I think the rumours are suggesting it may be some, or all, first party games going from Day 1. But only time will tell.
Hideo Kojima + some purple games
Summary posts like these are some of my favorite and the formatting here is always easy to read. Keep on keeping on.
I like the look of Bloomwalker
The difference is that all of these games are third-party, @Gabrie, so basically, Microsoft will give a developer a lump sum to bring the game to Game Pass, and then give them more money based on how well it does on the service, thus if it is played by a million gamers, they get another 500k or whatever. Effectively, the only risk to Microsoft is the initial lump sum, because if the game performs well, then Microsoft will make money from it even if they have to give the developer a bonus.
When it comes to first-party games, Microsoft have to pay to get the game developed, and whilst there is no initial lump sum to for them to put the game on Game Pass, and maybe no bonus (depending on how the contract was set up, I guess), the problem for Microsoft is that every person that plays the game on Game Pass is potentially a lost sale. Obviously, not everyone that plays the game via Game Pass would have bought the game had that been the only option, but there is definitely a lot of revenue lost in putting a first-party game on Game Pass, which is completely different from third-party games. I would suggest that most (if not all) first-party games that go on to Game Pass loses revenue for Microsoft, which is why these rumours of Microsoft looking at removing day one games have surfaced.
What I would say is that if Microsoft do remove day one first-party games from the service, then the extra revenue they make on those games from direct sales could be funnelled back into paying for more third-party games to enter the service. Basically, it is entirely possible for Game Pass to improve (potentially substantially improve) by removing day one first-party games. The additional revenue that the first-party games make for Microsoft just needs to be handled properly...
Shape of Dreams looks cool and Gamepass. Very nice.
@InterceptorAlpha I compliment them on this all the time too. Their sister sites could learn a few things from them, especially Push Square.
@Ken_Kaniff They genuinely do good coverage here. Been my main for Xbox for some time because of that and how friendly staff is.
Agreed on the sister site comment.
Raji: Kalyuga looks cool
@Fiendish-Beaver I definitely can see the logic there in the day one first party removal potentially improving the service via boosted 3rd party lineups... However, that fall firmly into the "I'll believe it when I see it" category of things for me. Wasted potential and improper management along with a waywardness from their initially stated goals and promises to the landing zone has been a defining characteristic of the Xbox one and onward eras.
Honestly, I feel like they've sort of lodged themselves firmly between a rock and a hard place here with GamePass and the xbox brand in general, seeing as the brand has become synonymous with the service at this point. Subscription Services will all eventually reach a peak with subscribers and target audience, and no amount of marketing or additions to the service will be capable of pushing that much higher now.
As costs have steadily risen, development cycles lengthening, and all that jazz, since gamepass inception a decade ago (or close to), the profitability of the whole thing has (I would imagine) shrunken considerably and every first party game is expected and needs to both drive Subscription numbers AND sell well, which led to the multi platform approach to subsidize lost xbox platform sales, and they put themselves in a place where the Subscription model simultaneously isn't profitable enough to satisfy shareholder expectations or cover the ballooning dev costs, but is too valuable to eliminate or significantly alter after becoming part of the core identity of the brand itself...
Absolutely right, @BiPolarB3ar1986. The only reason that Microsoft started to put their games on PlayStation was because the games were not making satisfactory revenue on Xbox, PC and Game Pass.
The problem is that many amongst us are celebrating a (partial) return to exclusivity on Xbox, but the issues that drove Xbox games to PlayStation are still present, and arguably worse. What this means is that games like E-Day, which could have had considerable success on PlayStation, is now faced with failure (as far as revenue expectations are concerned), which is why I am not convinced that Xbox will return to full exclusivity simply because of Game Pass.
I've said it a number of times now, but I think that Sharma is using E-Day as an experiment regarding exclusivity on Xbox, and she may even use it as an example of why Xbox cannot return to exclusivity (so long as the games release day one on Game Pass) because the games just don't create enough revenue. I think she will tell the Xbox community that Xbox cannot return to exclusivity, and E-Day will ably demonstrate why...
@Fiendish-Beaver You know what I am worried about as far as the whole sacrificial lamb theory there (which I absolutely agree with your assessment of Sharma's strategy, it is sadly spot on) is less for Gears E Day; I think that the Gears IP can withstand all that and come out the other side intact either way. I worry instead about Clockwork Revolution as it is a brand new IP that for me is far and away the game i am most excited about and have been pining for since its initial announcement however long ago it's been now.
InXile is one of my absolute favorite developers. I have liked or loved every single one of their games put out going back to Wasteland 2 and own every one of them, with double dipping on titles that aren't Play Anywhere in addition. Though this is their first release that isnt isometric crpg style, I am confident it is going to live up to the hype by everything I've seen so far and given the fact they seem to have been given the time and freedom to ensure it comes out right rather than rushed out the door. But it seems now nearly impossible for it to be a console selling platform and ecosystem boosting behemoth, and more likely no matter how good or great even it winds up being I fear it is almost in a lose/lose spot here due to the exclusivity tag slapped on it and all the increasing scrutiny it'll receive due to that. Thats a lot to put on a smallish developer's first foray into the first person cinematic rpg realm and an unfair burden
What about… first party exclusives are day one on GP, multiplat first party launch paid first, then come to GP in 6 months or so? This dual strategy could lead to folks subbing for the exclusives and letting the sub ride until the multiplat game drops in. Kind of how the likes of AppleTV etc have one big show on the go, with another coming just as the first series is finishing up
Totally agree, @BiPolarB3ar1986, and I too love inXile. I actually kick-started Wasteland 2 and 3 on PC, though I requested my copy of 3 for Xbox as well because they gave us 2 copies of the game.
I think there is a chance that inXile will not survive once it. I can see them releasing the game and then Sharma wielding the axe because these 1600 job loses have to be found from somewhere, and the easiest target is a studio that has just released a game as that is the point at which they have yet to start on a new game. No better time to get rid of them, unfortunately. I think there is going to be a huge target on their back no matter how the game performs...
