There's evidently been a fair bit of confusion about what games you'll be able to play on the ROG Xbox Ally handheld when it releases in Holiday 2025, and we highlighted recently how native Xbox console games won't be supported on it.
That doesn't mean it's just a streaming device by any means though! This is a very powerful handheld PC, meaning you should get access to pretty much any game that runs on a Windows 11 PC already, unless certain exceptions are made for whatever reason.
So far, we know that you'll be able to play games in the following ways on the ROG Xbox Ally handheld:
- Buying games via the Xbox PC app
- Accessing your "free" Xbox PC games courtesy of Xbox Play Anywhere
- Playing every game in the PC Game Pass library (if subscribed)
- Buying games on Steam (that includes PlayStation games!)
- Buying games on other launchers (likely to include Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, etc.)
- Likely to support most PC game mods, and games that don't even require launchers!
- Streaming games via Xbox Cloud Gaming with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate
- Streaming your Xbox console to the device through Xbox Remote Play
- Likely to support streaming through NVIDIA GeForce Now and similar services
Essentially, you should think of the ROG Xbox Ally handheld as a powerful Windows 11 PC with Xbox-specific features, rather than a traditional console. The vast majority of Xbox console games will still be playable in their PC form (or, as mentioned, you can stream the console versions), but there are certain titles that haven't made it to PC.
It's still very early days and we don't have all the details on the ROG Xbox Ally handheld yet, so we might discover more officially supported launchers and more ways to play games on the device in the weeks and months to come. Keep in mind there are two variants of the handheld too - and the cheaper version might struggle with more demanding games.
We should also mention that Xbox is aiming to bring multiple storefronts together as part of the ROG Xbox Ally's user interface at launch, meaning you won't need to keep switching between apps and messing with Windows in order to go between Xbox, Steam and other launchers. Again, we'll have to wait and see how this pans out!
