No, The ROG Xbox Ally Handheld Doesn't Play Native Console Games

We're seeing a little bit of confusion doing the rounds on social media about whether the newly-announced ROG Xbox Ally handheld will play native console games or not, and the answer is that it doesn't (at least not as things stand!).

This is a Windows PC handheld that's designed to play native PC games, which means you can still play games from the Xbox PC app and PC Game Pass (as well as stuff from Steam and other launchers), but not native console games.

"Powered by Windows 11, the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X give you access to your full library of PC games from Xbox and other game stores as well. Whether you're into indie gems or AAA blockbusters, or classic games with custom mods installed, you can play them all."

That's where Xbox Play Anywhere comes in though! There are over 1000 games supported with Xbox Play Anywhere already, and it's a feature where you get the PC version of a game for free if you buy it on an Xbox console.

So, theoretically, if you end up buying the ROG Xbox Ally this holiday, you should already have a bunch of games ready to go when you turn it on - all the Xbox Play Anywhere titles that you've bought on console in the past. Alternatively, you can buy your favourite games from the Xbox PC app or Steam, for example, if you want to play them.

Xbox Cloud Gaming will also allow you to stream titles to the device, while having access to other launchers means you can play all sorts of PC games - any launcher that runs on Windows should run on the Xbox handheld too!

Let's hope we might get native console games in the future, but it's not something we're expecting right now. Think of the ROG Xbox Ally as a Windows 11 gaming PC with Xbox-specific features - because that's basically what it is!
