Ok, so I'm finally in the market for an external harddrive. I hate deleting stuff and there's a lot of X1 games on the way I want so I'm looking to make sure I'm fully prepared for that. GameStop has a 3TB Seagate harddrive for $130 and I have a $25 off coupon. I'm going to guess 3TB is enough but still I'd like advice when it comes to buying one of these. Also would like to know how reliable Seagate is?

I've got a 3TB Seagate drive and have had it for about six months. Have had absolutely no problems with it at all - very happy with the purchase. Can't speak for long-term reliability of that model of course, but I can tell you that their PC drives are generally very reliable.

I also used a SEAGATE 3TB for my xbox one console, I've had it for a few months now without issues. 3TB will be more then enough for the life of the xbox one console. BEST of all you can copy games from hard drive to hard drive while both are plugged into the console. You can even move games to another hard drive if you decide to upgrade.

The maximum supported size is 8TB per hard drive and the xbox one does support up to 2 hard drives working at the same time so the maximum for now is 16TB.

I also have a back up drive i use to store games that i bring over to a friends house, all you need to do is copy it from hard drive to hard drive.

If the difference to upgrade to a 4TB drive is little get a 4b instead.

Seagate is quite reliable, i only trust seagate and Western digital. Stay away from fujitsu , toshiba and other mechanic hard drives as they won't be as reliable.

Thanks for the info guys. This will cost me just over $100 from Gamestop after my coupon from their rewards program, I'm going to go for it, around Christmas time.

@Gamer83, your welcome. if you are getting it around christmas look into getting the 4th version as by then the prices will drop due to the larger drives being released.

@Gamer83, right now the difference from 3TB to 4TB is 20-30 on average. sometimes they are the same when they 4TB is on sale.  in canada future shop has most of the 4th drives on sale for the price on the 3tb.  I'm around 10% full on my 3tb and i have over 20 games on it. Then again i have 4 full retail games thanks to the EA Access services.

I think GameStop has a 4TB for about $180, so, it's a pretty decent jump up. I may look to get a 4TB in the future if 3TB isn't enough but I generally end each gen with a pretty even split among consoles. So if I get 70 games during the X1's and PS4's, 35 at least will be on Xbox One. It sounds like 3TB may be enough for that, and it saves me some money so that's route I think I'll go. Of course if I come into the money, an 8TB would be ideal. I'm sure there would be no worries with that.

@Gamer83, I'm sure a black friday deal will have deals on the 4TB drives. i think i've even seen the 5TB drive going for around 250.  3TB is a lot of space, but don't forget all the free games that come out each month, eventually they will start adding up.

i don't know how reliable the 8TB drives are as they are very new, only time will tell

I was going to create a thread for people to discuss their current external hard drive set ups but thought it might be better to revive this aptly titled thread!

What sort of drives are people using on their Xbox ones? Has anyone got the Seagate or WD game drives?

I'm currently driveless, I wanted to get the 4tb Seagate Xbox one game drive when it was down to £90 (similar price to non Xbox branded drives) but it went up to £100 by the time I had been paid so I didn't get it and it seems to be sold out now.

Do people use the branded game drives or just standard hard drives? I believe the branded ones boast that they have custom firmware for optimal performance, has anyone noticed this?

They still have some branded 2tb drives available for similar prices to their non branded counterparts, in some funky designs no less (gears 5 and star wars fallen jedi).

I'm tempted by these even though id take a 2tb hit in space over my preferred drive but I'd go for it if this so called performance boost was legitimate... Otherwise Im tempted to just repurpose one of the old 1tb or 2tb drives I have laying around.

I'm not looking for externally powered drives due to the fact I've already filled up two separate ten way extensions with all the stuff on my desk but feel free to discuss them anyway!

I should also add that I'm not currently willing to upgrade the internal drive as my Xbox one X is still in warranty and it will void it. (I recently upgraded my PS4 internal drive which is why I now have a spare external laying around!)

@Gamer83 yeah it should be enough

i know some retailers such as amazon actually sell official XBOX branded HDD's for the XB1, i got one myself and it's had no issues at all

Seagate isn't the best but they're usually good. They make the internal drives in the Xbox One and PS4, as well as some Xbox 360s. I haven't had a problem with them. I did have a couple Seagate laptop drives die but that same laptop ate 2 Toshiba drives at an accelerated rate, so I blame that on a defective motherboard. That's more a testament to Dell than Seagate.

@Vincent294 weirdly both my PS3 and PS4 had Toshiba stock drives. Normally I go for Seagate or WD as they are well known brands but I always check reviews. Unfortunately some drives are just bum drives for whatever reason, maybe a bad run of them. I tend to buy internal drives direct from WD because they know how to package them properly for the most part but I'm not so fussy about external drives because they are normally protected (from delivery bumps) by the consumer packaging

@Tasuki nope

honestly i didn't bother looking at the date because i didn't think any really old threads would show up on the home page because the site hasn't been back that long

besides who actually looks at the dates?
