We hate to keep bringing you news on layoffs, but it feels like it's happening all the time at the moment.
This latest story is about former Halo developer and current Destiny and Marathon developer Bungie, which is owned these days by Sony and PlayStation Studios. In a couple of statements, it's been revealed that a "significant" reduction in workforce has been implemented at Bungie, with most of the Destiny team in particular being affected.
Here's a bit of what Sony's Hermen Hulst had to say to employees earlier today:
"We have made the decision to reduce Bungie’s workforce, affecting a significant number of employees, including most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members. There are also reductions across SIE teams that support Bungie’s operations."
"Over the past several months, together with Bungie leadership, we reviewed the studio’s long-term direction, development priorities, resource needs, and role within our broader portfolio strategy. We explored multiple alternatives before concluding that a reduction was necessary to align the studio’s resources with its current priorities and long-term goals."
In a separate statement by Bungie on social media, the company admits that it "fell short of expectations these past few years" with Destiny 2, and that the company is embarking on a reduction in force as it seeks to reorganise.
Just a few weeks ago, it was confirmed that Destiny 2 was reaching end-of-life status, and that the game would remain playable but not receive any major new content.
Sony says Marathon "remains an important part of our portfolio", however, and that the company "will continue to support the team as they build on the strong foundation established in Season 1 and 2, and as they work on incubation efforts for future projects".
Our best wishes go out to all the Bungie team members affected by today's very sad news.
