Xbox Is Adding A New Feature To 'Optimise' Download Speeds For Games 1

It looks like Xbox is working to improve download speeds for console game installs and updates.

Today (July 23), select members of the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring in the Xbox Insider Program began testing a new update that aims to "optimise game install and update speeds" through the introduction of a smart download client.

If testing goes well, the feature will likely roll out to the lower Xbox Insider rings before an eventual public release in the coming weeks and months ahead.

Here's what the Xbox Engineers have to say:

Users will experience a new feature to optimize game install and update speeds by introducing a smart download client. Shortly after your game download begins, the client will check which content servers are available for the install or update. It will then test the connection speed to each server pool and select the fastest available connection for that install. The speed test will rerun periodically during the install or update to ensure that the client continues using the fastest available connection.

As game installs continue to grow in size, we've become more aware of our download speeds on console. We don't know exactly how Xbox's current client works, but if this new smart one helps speed installs and updates up, we're all for it. Right?
