Opinion: Xbox Series X Still Hasn't Been Fully Utilised Yet, But 2026 Could Be The Year

It's weird to make such a statement, but, I genuinely don't believe Xbox Series X has been properly taken advantage of almost five years into its lifecycle, and I'm surely not alone in that feeling. In recent years, we have finally started to see the cross-gen period fizzle out — which is good news for current-gen players — but it still feels like lots of the tech powering current-gen games has its roots in last-gen. However, I reckon this might be about to change in 2026, especially when you look at Xbox's slate of games for next year.

Before I move onto what Microsoft's doing though, I have to mention GTA 6 here. When it comes to actual concrete footage available to the public, the upcoming Rockstar epic really does feel the only proper current-gen game we're seeing at the moment. The tech powering the next Grand Theft Auto looks miles better than pretty much anything we've seen so far this generation, and that's an incredibly exciting prospect for next year alone.

Moving onto Xbox's 2026 slate, though, and things are looking very promising in that regard too. We have Fable which looks like a proper current-gen RPG built from the ground up for Xbox Series X|S, we have Gears of War: E-Day making the series' full current-gen debut next year, and we have new Forza and Halo games planned that are also free of any last-gen shackles. Exciting times ahead!

Gears of War: E-Day is one I'm particularly hyped for. I've always been a big Gears fan, and one thing no-one can deny is how technically impressive these games usually are. Gears 3 was an Xbox 360 showpiece, Gears 4 proved similar for Xbox One and then Gears 5 showed off Xbox One X in a super impressive light too. Despite the latter's incredibly impressive Series X|S upgrade, I just want to see The Coalition fully unleash the power of those current-gen machines.

Fable is of course looking epic too but we're still waiting on the big blowout for that one, while the next Halo and Forza are still very much under wraps over there at Xbox HQ. Phil Spencer has teased them all - but it'll likely be Developer Direct or the next summer showcase when we'll hear about those other two massive Xbox releases in a bit more detail.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that for those of you who feel similar to me in that you're still waiting for those big show-off Xbox Series X games, I reckon they're coming. 2026 is set to be a big year for AAA game releases, and here's hoping they can all show off just how great Microsoft's top-end current gen console is.

Agree with me on this? Which 2026 game are you most hyped for? Talk to us about it all down below.
