With the latest GTA 6 trailer now out in the wild, alongside a massive media and information blowout from developer Rockstar Games, we've gotten our deepest look at the next Grand Theft Auto game yet. At this point, the lack of direct gameplay has perhaps been a little disappointing, but I keep coming away with one overriding thought - this game looks incredible and will be unmatched on Xbox Series X|S.

If I'm being honest, I spoke about a similar thing just after the game's first trailer had dropped back in late 2023 - where I claimed that GTA 6 could be the star of this generation of gaming. Well, after Trailer 2's arrival I'm even more convinced - in fact, I'm not sure anything will come close to what Rockstar is aiming to deliver in May 2026.

Opinion: Nothing Will Come Close To GTA 6 As An Xbox Series X|S Showpiece1

Everything — from the game's varied locations and sweeping vistas to its densely packed cities and super-detailed character models — just looks unrivalled in the current gaming landscape. There are plenty of other developers who are supremely talented pumping out incredible looking games right now - but it's no secret that this generation's console hardware just hasn't been properly tapped into yet. Rockstar looks like it's finally set to do that next May.

I strongly urge you to take a good look at the team's big information blowout that we've posted about elsewhere at Pure Xbox today, if you have the time. The new trailer is one thing, but it's actually all of the screenshots, character bios and location breakdowns that have me most excited, to be honest. There's a level of detail in here that we just haven't seen before - and if the team can pair all of that with the size and scope we've come to expect from a new GTA game, this experience could be off the scale.

Of course, as I alluded to right at the start here, some proper gameplay from the player's perspective is still notably missing from Rockstar's marketing materials so far - and that's something I'm reserving judgement on for now. My awe is still largely centered around the game's visuals, but given how Grand Theft Auto V Next-Gen plays on Xbox Series X and S, I don't really have any doubts that the team can't nail that side of things. If they do nail the gameplay, I can't see any game coming close to GTA 6 for the rest of this generation.

Opinion: Nothing Will Come Close To GTA 6 As An Xbox Series X|S Showpiece2

There'll of course be surprises over the next few years - games that appear out of nowhere and just blow us away, but with a changing industry complete with vastly rising costs, I just can't see how anyone can rival Rockstar for the time being. They've got pretty much unlimited time and an unlimited budget to make this thing after the silly success of GTA 5, and it looks like they're utilising every bit of the privileged position they're in. It's all a little bit indulgent, admittedly, but I just want to see a developer really push this gen's fantastic Xbox hardware to the limit. And it looks very much like Rockstar is going to do that with Grand Theft Auto 6.
