by Update []: It's been confirmed! Mafia: Definitive Edition is indeed getting a 60FPS upgrade on Friday, August 14th, and it's free for everyone who already owns the game - but only in digital form on Xbox.
The weird thing here is that physical purchases do count on PlayStation if you want to upgrade to the new version, but they don't on Xbox for whatever reason.
"If you already own a physical or digital version of Mafia: Definitive Edition on PlayStation®4, you'll receive the digital version of Mafia: Definitive Edition on PS5® for free, which will be downloadable via the PlayStation Store. If you already own a digital version of Mafia: Definitive Edition on XBOX One, you'll receive the digital version of Mafia: Definitive Edition on XBOX Series X|S for free, which will be downloadable via the Microsoft Store."
In addition to 60FPS there will also be "technical improvements", but these have yet to be detailed at the time of writing. Unfortunately your save file won't be transferrable to the new version, so you'll have to start again for Series X|S.

On the same day, a special bundle called "Mafia: The Omertà Collection" will be going live on the Xbox Store featuring all four games in the Mafia series. Anyone who owns one or more games in that collection already (again only in digital form) will receive an unspecified discount on The Omertà Collection.

Original Story: When it comes to games that we always wish had received a 60FPS upgrade for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, Mafia: Definitive Edition is towards the top of the list, and now it finally might be getting one in the near future.
Various fans have spotted today that the ESRB has rated the game for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PS5, although no further details have been provided at this time. This kind of thing usually indicates that a re-release is on the way, but it's not a guarantee - and even if it happens, it could still be months away.
Here's a look at the ESRB rating:
Mafia: Definitive Edition ended up being in a weird position back when it released for Xbox One in the September of 2020, as it never got a native version for Xbox Series X or S when those consoles launched in November.
As a result, this absolutely beautiful game ended up being locked to a native 900p / 1440p depending on the console you were playing it on, and crucially only ran at a maximum of 30 frames per-second. People have been calling for a resolution and FPS boost for the past six years, and it finally looks like that might be happening.
Again though, there's no confirmation right now and we'll have to wait and see if 2K announces anything in the coming days / weeks / months. Until then, we'll be crossing our fingers for a much-requested upgrade on Xbox Series X|S.
We do want to mention that Mafia: Definitive Edition is heavily discounted on the Xbox Store, however! You can pick it up for just £5.24 / $5.99 as things stand, and we reckon that's an amazing price regardless of whether it gets a next-gen upgrade or not. Just be quick - the sale apparently ends at some point tomorrow.
