I’m happy that it was Microsoft that acquired Obsidian. It feels like righting the wrong of not acquiring BioWare back when they were making Xbox exclusives. I don’t know if Microsoft was ever in actual talks to acquire them, but it felt like a good fit at the time. Now Microsoft has a few great western RPG studios under their umbrella, and they’re even building a new one at Playground.
Crimson Skies was my favorite Xbox Live game back in the day. Sure, I played Halo 2 and I really enjoyed Spies vs Mercs online in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, but I sunk so many hours into Crimson Skies multiplayer. I would love for Microsoft to return to the IP.
I really wish Activision (and EA with its sports titles) would just transition to a yearly update for Call of Duty instead of developing a new title every year. This is coming from someone who doesn’t play Call of Duty multiplayer and used to just buy the games, beat the campaign, and then sell them. Warzone has been massively popular and it only continues to grow. Keep it free to play or heck, charge full price for just “Call of Duty” at the beginning of a new console generation, and then charge $20 or $30 every year for a big content update. This brand new Call of Duty (or Madden, FIFA, etc.) isn’t needed anymore. Warzone, Fortnite, and Apex have proven that with their “Seasons.” Dedicate one or two studios to that (IW and/or Treyarch) and let your other studios work on other things.
Please let Platinum make another Metal Gear Rising. That was one of my favorite games that generation. The story was nonsense, but the gameplay was incredibly fun and satisfying. Konami and/or Platinum even sent out a survey a few years ago asking if consumers would be interested in a new entry. Maybe there’s a chance with them looking to outsource Metal Gear Solid.
“Unfortunately, the same can't be said for Hivebusters, which harkens back to the linear level design seen in past entries.”
Great review Daniel! Personally, I’m fine with this. A short, linear, more (seemingly) lighthearted story with great Gears gameplay sounds like a great way to cap off this insane year.
Gears 5 turned out to be my favorite story in the series, and a massive part of that was due to the first half of the game. Searching for answers to Kait’s headaches and nightmares with Del (and occasionally Marcus via radio) while fleshing out some details from the previous games really stuck with me. However, the desert in the second half of the game really grated on me and I found myself looking up locations to finish that section sooner. So a short, super linear story sounds like a perfect palate cleanser.
I voted for OG because it was my first non-Nintendo console and I had such a blast with it. I got it in the spring of 2002 with Star Wars Obi-Wan. Early Xbox Live was such a blast too. I sunk so many hours in Crimson Skies multiplayer. And of course I fell in love with the Halo series on the OG Xbox. Finally, there’s still nothing like a huge LAN party, and Halo LAN parties were the best.

Re: Xbox Is Bringing Built-In Twitch Streaming Back To The Dashboard
This is great! I really like streaming to Mixer from my Xbox. Any idea if we’ll be able to have a chat window on screen like Mixer did?

Re: 'The Original' Xbox Dynamic Background Is Now Available
This brings me so much joy.
Re: Can You Guess All Of These Xbox Star Wars Games?
I find the lack of Star Wars: Obi-Wan on this list disturbing. (I know it’s because it’s not backwards compatible, which makes me sad.)

This probably means no new Spyro…😞

Re: Talking Point: What Was Your First Xbox Console And Game?
Original Xbox, sometime in Spring 2002, with Star Wars: Obi-Wan. It was my first non-Nintendo console and I had a blast. I got Halo shortly after.
