@Fenbops considering they've sold a whole lot more Series S devices than Series X devices they'd be committing brand suicide to drop the S at any time. I do feel they made some design flaws with both mostly regarding RAM and the odd split with different speeds (honestly it's like MS has an obsession with idiot RAM designs like with the XBOX 360 EDRAM and XBOX One ESRAM though they fixed that with the One X). They also should have made the Series S a 6Tflop machine to ensure a more realistic ability to hit the 1440p target.
Sounds like a limit in talent vs a limit to the machine seeing how there are much more advanced titles on the same console. While I do think Microsoft should have launched the S with a One X matching (technically exceeding) 6Tflops and the same RAM as the Series X there is very little to differentiate the two otherwise. Other than RAM management and speed I don't understand what the technical hurdle might be.
Maybe one place Microsoft shouldn't be cutting staff or budgets is in the studio that houses your most prolific and recognized franchise. You should be bleeding money to make sure your flagship game is supported and always top tier. You don't see the Forza team slacking on the job. Get 343 on track!
I have both and the Series S is great to travel with and I also use it with a 1080p monitor to play on when the main TV is being used by another family member. I bought the 512GB storage expansion which was all I'll ever be inclined to pay for until the prices come down or Microsoft allows other companies besides Seagate to make them. That and the internal storage keep it nice and simple while most of my games are on the Series X. The S is fantastic so long as you don't use it with a high end 4K TV where it does show some rough edges (literally). Great little console overall!
