The first wave of previews for The Blood of Dawnwalker are out in the wild, and it's sounding pretty darned good.
'Dawnwalker' is being developed by Rebel Wolves, a relatively new-ish studio spearheaded by former CD Projekt Red developers. It's described as an open-world dark fantasy RPG that sees you wield supernatural powers to save your family as a hybrid human by day and vampire by night chappy.
Folks were treated to a four-hour demo from an early section of the game, which saw protagonist Coen make the most of his time - a sort of limited "currency" in this game to push forward main and side quests against vampire rule, blood, and taxes.
Here's what the first previews are saying about The Blood of Dawnwalker so far:
IGN
"And, after having experienced it all for myself, I remain confident that The Blood of Dawnwalker is the next RPG worth paying very close attention to."
GamesRadar
"But what truly surprises me is how well The Blood of Dawnwalker comes together already – for all of the boundaries it pushes, nothing feels risky or gimmicky in play. What remains, then, is an ambitious love letter to role-playing itself – and although The Blood of Dawnwalker is launching in a slew of new games, what I've seen so far is enough to guarantee I'll be back to play more come September 3."
Kotaku
"It’s abundantly clear that Dawnwalker is an ambitious game, filled with idiosyncratic ideas, even while it tries to emulate a lot of what made The Witcher 3 so special. There are, of course, plenty of question marks still there—if the combat might grow stale, how demanding the time limit might actually be, and how the game achieves narrative weight with seemingly so much variance in how you can approach the story."
Eurogamer
"Dawnwalker is an RPG with ideas, and the big ones - the time system, having no main quest, and the new combat system - seem to work very well. I was impressed by the quests I discovered, too, and how they had multiple stages to them and considered interactions, with engaging characters and writing."
VGC
"After four hours with The Blood of Dawnwalker, it’s instantly shot up the list of my most anticipated titles for the rest of the year. It is, of course, releasing in September alongside every other piece of software not named GTA 6."
There you have it, lots of positivity and excitement across the board. The Blood of Dawnwalker draws several comparisons to The Witcher, but it seems it's definitely its own RPG with fresh ideas.
Rebel Wolves has opted for September 3rd as the game's release date, and it will be available on Xbox Series X|S.
