'It's A Tough Topic' - Xbox CEO Shares Her Latest Thoughts On Exclusives

Last night, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma appeared in a 15-minute interview as part of Bloomberg Tech, and she was asked for her thoughts about exclusives during the chat - something that's been a big talking point for Xbox in recent months.

Back in April, Sharma and her team officially confirmed they were "reevaluating" what to do about exclusivity in the future, and speaking last night, she confirmed that the reevaluating process is still ongoing.

However, she stated that platforms "must" have exclusive content and services in order to succeed, but also acknowledged that as the second biggest publisher in the world, Xbox needs its games to reach a large audience.

"It's a tough topic. Look, we're the number two publisher in the world, and in order to be a great publisher you must have your games reach large audiences to play. At the same time, we're increasingly becoming a platform, and in order to have a platform you must have exclusive content and services.

We're looking at that very closely, I think that we have to be very thoughtful about each title and how we want to think about it, and learn from similar cases in the industry. That's what we're doing."

Based on what we're hearing here, it certainly doesn't sound as though the Xbox CEO wants to take away all games from PlayStation and Nintendo, and realistically it wouldn't make good business sense to do so (and perhaps wouldn't even be legal in regards to the Activision Blizzard and Bethesda acquisition terms).

Could we see certain Xbox Games Studios titles remaining platform exclusives, or Xbox laying out that all first-party releases from XGS will be timed exclusives for a year, for example? Maybe that's a more realistic prospect, although we're just spitballing here - it sounds like Sharma hasn't come to any conclusions about what to do just yet.

We'll obviously keep an eye on it and let you know when Sharma, Matt Booty and the rest of Team Xbox come to a decision, and in the meantime we'd love to hear your thoughts about these latest exclusivity comments down below.
