Well, this is a bit of surprise for a Monday morning! Yesterday, as part of the Paris Major for Rocket League esports, developer Psyonix announced that its beloved multiplayer title is getting a massive engine upgrade; it's moving to Unreal Engine 6 in the near future.

That's right - Epic Games has basically used Rocket League to soft-reveal the next major iteration of Unreal Engine; a toolset that's become hugely popular over the last few generations. If those gens are anything to go by, UE6 will likely be the most popular game engine of the Xbox Project Helix era.

So far, then, the above trailer is all we've got to go on in terms of what the tech looks like. There's a glimpse of Rocket League running on UE6 there - but aside from that, we don't know much about the new engine just yet. We'll throw a few screenshots down below too, if you'd rather not watch the video!

As for what's next from Epic regarding Unreal Engine 6, we'd expect them to do a full engine reveal at some point soon like it did with that Lumen/Nanite UE5 reveal on the eve of Xbox Series X|S - and you never know, we might start to see other titles pop up with UE6 announcements in the near future. We wonder if Gears of War: E-Day could get a sneaky upgrade...
