Last week, we shared how Starfield had reportedly sold around 140,000 copies on PS5 during its first week on Sony's platform, which was described at the time by Alinea Analytics as "a middling start" but still better than other recent Xbox first-party titles such as Ninja Gaiden 4 and The Outer Worlds 2.
Now, Mat Piscatella of analysis firm Circana is reporting that Starfield was the best-selling video game for digital and physical purchases in the US during that first week, which marked its first appearance in the top spot since 2023.

Here's a look at what Piscatella had to say:
A follow-up report from Kotaku mentions how the "competition wasn't stiff" for Starfield during that time, with MLB The Show 26 coming in second and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 in third, and that Circana doesn't get digital sales data from Nintendo, so there's an outside chance it might have otherwise been beaten by something on the Switch 2 (although the only major launch around that time was Pokémon Champions, a free-to-play game).
In terms of the breakdown of sales, Starfield apparently sold a whopping 95% of copies on PS5 during that week, but that only includes the full game and not separate expansions. It still had an impact on Xbox consoles as well though — the game jumped from 56th to 18th in the player count rankings on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
Ultimately, Piscatella sums it up as a "solid debut" for Starfield on PS5, but has more interest in whether it'll retain momentum over the coming weeks. And who knows — its success on Sony's platform could have an impact on Xbox's exclusivity or non-exclusivity plans in the future.
