We've got a new Xbox Game Pass addition today (March 19th), and it's surely one of the greatest RPGs of all time!
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut has entered the Game Pass library for Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC users (as well as Xbox Cloud Gaming) across the Ultimate, Premium and PC tiers, and this is a game that has an average rating of over 90 on Metacritic across these systems — its highest is a 97 for The Final Cut on PC.
At one point a couple of years ago, it was actually the highest-rated video game of all time on Metacritic:
Looking into it further, the 97 rating is only based on 12 reviews, whereas the original 2019 release of Disco Elysium has a 91 rating based on 70 reviews. The Xbox Series X version of The Final Cut has a 92 rating based on four reviews.
The takeaway is that Disco Elysium is a really good game, and one you should definitely consider trying if you have any interest in RPGs whatsoever. Here's what we've said about it in the past, as well as some impressions from our sister sites, Push Square and Nintendo Life:
Pure Xbox: "There's a chaotic world full of amazing characters here, one that challenges you to forge your own path, to be the version of its central protagonist that you want to be, as you explore the painterly, realist environs of Elysium. This Final Cut edition also fixes the only problem we had with the original game by adding full voice acting, resulting in one the very best RPGs we've ever played. There's nothing else quite like Disco Elysium."
Push Square: "Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is an exceptional achievement in role-playing. Expertly written, it's an utterly engrossing detective drama at its best, and a fantastic sense of humour keeps the whole thing grounded. Its deliberately slow and methodical pacing won't be for everyone, but once you're invested, it's incredibly hard to put down. A haunting video game, for all the right reasons."
Nintendo Life: "Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is an absolute triumph. The narrative and dialogue, which is already wonderfully compelling on its own, has been given a massive boost thanks to the excellent voice acting introduced for the Final Cut. The gameplay features a host of branching paths for you to explore, and while the slow, methodical approach may turn a few people off, this is nevertheless one of the most well-told stories in any medium from the last few years."
