Yesterday, we took a look at Resident Evil Requiem across Xbox Series X and S, with Capcom delivering another solid RE title on both current-gen Xbox consoles. However, perhaps the more interesting comparison is how the Series S version performs against Nintendo's new hybrid console, and those findings are certainly intriguing.
Yep, the folks over at Digital Foundry have of course been looking at how Requiem runs on Switch 2, and how that version compares to Xbox Series S. In short, Series S trumps Switch 2 in the performance department, but strangely, the Switch 2 version has better image quality overall - despite Series S running at a higher resolution.
"The Switch 2 port runs with an unlocked frame-rate, whether you're playing docked or in handheld mode. What this means is that while the game arguably may look better than Xbox Series S, frame-rate is far more variable."
DF puts the image quality differences down to Nvidia's DLSS tech, which is present in the Switch 2 version. Basically, Switch 2 runs at native 540p with DLSS - and compared to Series S's native 720p output with different upscaling tech, the Nvidia version turns in better results.
"Switch 2 may well be the least capable current-gen system in terms of pixel-pushing power, but the port is elegant and DLSS is once again instrumental in making this conversion work. Resolution is slashed to 540p docked, but the Nvidia upscaler delivers image quality that bests the Series S version running at a native 720p."
As hinted at in the top quote though, performance is certainly king on the all-digital Xbox version. You're looking at a mostly stable 60FPS on Series S, while Switch 2 drops as low as 30FPS in docked and into the 20s via portable play.
This is all pretty interesting stuff, and if you'd rather digest it in video form, we'll throw that analysis down below for you to take a look at. Underneath is also the full DF write-up, if you'd like to check that out via the team's newly-launched website.
