Instead, this is now a paid game ($24.99) that functions offline, although it does come with online co-op support too. The devs have been implementing a "deep structural rebuilding" for much of the past year to accommodate this.
If you never tried the early access version of Towerborne, it's a side-scrolling action RPG developed by Stoic of Banner Saga fame, and sees you competing solo or with up to three other players in a story campaign where you'll need to defend the Belfry and "push back the corruption threatening humanity’s survival".
The vast rework for Towerborne 1.0's release includes all of the following features:
- Switch from planned free-to-play title to a "buy once, offline game"
- Story campaign has been completed with new content and improvements
- Two new bosses
- Completely rebalanced and brand-new difficulty system with new 'Brutal' difficulty too
- Reworked and reimagined World Map
- New gear, new abilities, new Forge system
- New music
- New cosmetics, free to acquire through gameplay
- Multiple save slots
In other words, you definitely shouldn't overlook this one, even if you played it in early access!
The good news is that Towerborne is officially available with Xbox Game Pass today (in fact, it should have literally just gone live), although only for the Ultimate, Premium and PC tiers. Everyone else can pick it up for $24.99 as mentioned, or alternatively grab the Deluxe Edition for some extra cosmetic sets and crafting materials.
"We’re excited to announce that we will be exiting early access and Xbox Game Preview and launching our full game on February 26, 2026, on Xbox, PC, Steam and PlayStation 5."
"This major update represents a huge shift for the game and the community, and we have worked hard to incorporate as much of your feedback as we could. We could not have done this without your participation and contributions, and again, we want to thank each and every one of you."
