Yesterday, we reported how Xbox had teamed up with Kojima Productions and 505 Games to fix a long-reported game save issue with the Xbox PC version of Death Stranding Director's Cut, and now we've unfortunately got another example to bring to your attention.
Thanks to Pure Xbox member OskarRex, we were made aware of a similar situation for the Xbox PC and PC Game Pass title Middle-earth: Shadow of War, which has been receiving reports for months now about lost progress.
Not everyone is experiencing it, but there are enough continuous reports over the past five months to call this an ongoing, game-breaking issue for some people. It simply won't save at all in certain cases.
Interestingly, WB Games has responded to multiple players suggesting the "appropriate teams" have been made aware:
We can confirm that in our limited testing here at Pure Xbox, we also couldn't get Middle-earth: Shadow of War to save via the Xbox PC version (there's no manual save option in the game, it's all automatic). We've seen no such reports with the console version, however.
One potentially major problem here is that Shadow of War developer Monolith Productions no longer exists, having been closed in February 2025 by Warner Bros. In other words, it's not like they can just go back to their old game and fix the issue, but hopefully someone from those "appropriate teams" can find a resolution ASAP.
We'll obviously let you know if hear anything more about this, but for now, our recommendation is to play Middle-earth: Shadow of War on Xbox One, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S, or via Xbox Cloud Gaming if you have access to it.
