Obsidian Aware Of Demand For Fallout: New Vegas 2, But Own IP Has Taken Priority In 2025

Every now and again, we get a story about Fallout: New Vegas 2 and whether Obsidian might return to provide a sequel at some point in the future, but it sounds like the studio is happy working on its own IP as things stand in 2025.

Speaking to The Game Business recently, Obsidian’s VP of operations Marcus Morgan admitted that New Vegas 2 gets brought up by fans a lot, but being part of Microsoft has allowed the team to savour the "joy" of building in-house IP.

Here's a bit of what Morgan had to say:

"I know everyone on the internet, on every game we announce, asks: When’s the next Fallout: New Vegas? When’s the next whatever?"

"But this year, all three of the games are IP that we’ve created. Our history prior to Microsoft surrounded working on others’ IP. And this is the joy that we get of… how do we build our own IP? And we’ve got to the part where we have sequels to all of them."

Of course, in 2025 alone we've seen Obsidian release Avowed, Grounded 2 and The Outer Worlds 2, so it's been an extremely busy time for the studio this year. All three of those games will continue to get support in 2026 as well, especially in the case of Grounded 2 which is still in early access as things stand.

As for what's next? That remains to be seen, and perhaps there is a chance that a Fallout: New Vegas sequel could still happen - the game's lead writer actually rejoined Obsidian earlier this year, although immediately clarified that he wasn't working on New Vegas 2 at the time. We'll have to wait and see what the future holds, but in the meantime there's plenty of new Fallout content on the way this year including a new Fallout 4 edition and major Fallout 76 update.
