Talking Point: How Do You Feel About Ubisoft+ Classics Being Added To Game Pass Ultimate?

I'd have preferred the choice, personally. The Ubi Classics library isn't far off being a bargain bin. Scrap Fortnite Crew, and introduce Ubi+ instead.

It's not worth the money at all, you can buy almost all of those Ubisoft games for a fraction of the price on sale. If GPU included Ubisoft+ Premium, meaning we got all Ubisoft games on the service day-one as well as all DLCs, then I'd be more understanding of the price increase. But that's not gonna happen.

Some simple math and google you'll find the majority of the games available can be had new/used physical or on sale digital, in it's near library entirety for less than 1 or 2 months of GP ultimate if you try hard enough and you do not need any tier of GP to install and play. Games like Assassin's Creed will take at least a week of play to complete achievements/100%. The maths don't math in the value or necessity department. Easy cancel.

In my opinion, EA Play added a lot of value to the service. But Ubisoft+ feels a bit irrelevant, with games that are of little value and not very appealing.

If titles like Assassin's Creed Shadow arrive in the coming months, I may change my mind. But in general, Ubisoft as a developer feels very exhausted, as if it can no longer release interesting titles.

There's quite a few I haven't played. Not that into FC or AC really, and a lot of those have been on game pass or gwg already. I wouldn't buy them even on sale, but I started Child of Light and it's pretty good. There's a few others that are worth a look, but the service itself is really not something I would pay for, or consider a bonus worth the price increase.

EA Play at least has a big back catalogue and new games added within a year. There's been quite a few games I've played that felt like real value there, like the Jedi Games, ME:L, ZUMA!! etc. and I'd miss it more than Ubi Classics for sure.

It's just not worth it anymore for me. I love Game Pass, but I'm just priced out for Ultimate and not interested without the day one Microsft Studios games. I just don't game enough for the rest to make up for that.

I own every single one of the Assassin's Creed games. Every one of them, including the side-scrolling ones. I also own every single Far Cry game, including Blood Dragon. Plus I already own most of the other games, the only games I do not buy are sports titles, but there's a reason for that; I'm not interested in them!

So as I said before, if part of the cost of the increase in Ultimate is to cover the inclusion of these games, then they are utterly wasted on me, as is the Fortnite Crew (or whatever it's called). Absolutely not interested. I'd rather they weren't included, and I was paying less as a consequence...

I already own most of the games available and the rest I could have but wouldn't play them so didn't bother buying , so if I carry on with ultimate I'm paying to rent games I already own and with Fortnite I'll never use so I'll b paying for that also.

How about a tier that includes day ones without the extra fat like ubisoft and fortnite

That Xbox says it’s selling Game pass tiers as “your choice”, is a huge PR lie because you don’t get any choice to not pay for all the old irrelevant games as part of Game Pass, Which Xbox uses to justify their gross price increase.
Don’t care about Ubisoft or EA games at all but we’re forced to pay for it. Disgusting

It helps a bit but I have most of those games anyway. They need to reconsider cost of ultimate maybe £19.99 so under £20 not so bad. Be interesting to see how the whole Fortnite battle pass will go. I might start playing that more regularly now

I don’t want it and the addition of it to GPU makes it far less likely I’ll ever use GPU again other than the single 3-month card I have stashed away for Forza Horizon 6.

Literally pointless, all those games can be purchased for $10 or less.

I was thinking about the whole situation and I had a thought. Bare with me here.

• Including all releases day one isnt sustainable.
• You double the cost to access the tier that has them.
• Folks cancel in outrage.
• You make a cheaper tier that let's you access them 12 months later.
• People join that and start to buy games on release again.
• You get what you want without having to admit you were wrong about including them.

Its almost like MS have purposely caused outrage to force people into the gamepass equivalent of the PS Plus model. You get AAA games later, you get Ubisoft+, you get online play.

Its not like for like but its damn close.

I feel 'meh' about it in truth. Obviously the games it adds are not 'new' and many have been on sale dirt cheap, been on Game Pass or even given away with Gold. However, it does add more Games to a service that is all about providing a 'Library' of games you can play at no additional charge. I would have less 'issue' with a small increase in price with Ubisoft+ and other changes, but it doesn't really add 'value' from my perspective.

I have much more of an issue with them forcing Fortnite Crew on EVERY Ultimate Subscriber - that doesn't increase the Library of Games so it should have been a 'Perk' for Game Pass Members that actually play Fortnite (a F2P game) to add the 'Premium' tier Subscription at a 'discount' from the Epic price.

To me, the addition of EA Access and Ubisoft+ do at least add 'Games' to their service - the fact that they are 'older' titles is irrelevant as the vast majority of the games in Game Pass are over a month old - so it does 'increase' the number of games accessible - but these too could be 'perks' to tailor your Subscription. For example Xbox GPU is $17, add EA access and/or Ubisoft+ for $3 each and Fortnite Crew for $7 for example if you want....

@Weebleman I've seen people suggesting this conspiracy that MS is masterminding some grand scheme to kill day one games. I see two problems with that.

One, they have to pay for day one up front. They need people to be subscribed at the highest tier to pay off the increased investment in day one games. Now up to 75 day one games, that's potentially a 50% increase in up front costs they need to recoup.

Two, the appeal of game pass is day one games. That's the reason it was so popular, and killing day one will not just transfer people down to lower tiers, it will kill the entire thing. I can't imagine they actually want to kill game pass.

Rather than these guys being some 4d chess playing geniuses, it's much more plausible that these suits are completely out of touch with their customers, and just really bad at their jobs.

Its just a nothing addition that doesn't add any value for me personally much like the fortnite sub thingy.

It really depends on how much time you spend playing games and how many you get through. If you have the time to play several hours daily and play through multiple games a month it's good value for you. Adding a load of extra games and other perks is all well and good but you have to find the time to take advantage of it. Sometimes too much as part of a subscription isn't great value if you don't really use much of it.

Most of the games are old

• they are super cheap to buy
• they have pretty much all been on GP
• they are on PS so if you sub to both they become worthless.

So I’d remove both.

Charge $25 for ultimate and include all first party DLC

@Weebleman Not neccessarily. If you lose Ultimate Subscribers - even if they are dropping to Premium or Essential, that has a big impact in their monthly revenue. Instead of almost guaranteeing say $400m a month, that drops now down to say $200m a month - but people won't necessaril be spending that money on Games or buying them 'new' instead.

Most of the Premium Subscribers may well choose to wait up to a year for them to come to their tier - otherwise may as well drop to Essential and the rest may just wait for sales instead.

Instead of playing CoD, Outer Worlds 2, Ninja Gaiden, Clockwork Revolution and Fable via GPU, they may just buy CoD (as its something they'll play all year with friends) and wait for the rest to come to their tier or be on sale at very low cost. No guarantee those gamers will buy Day 1.

So not only will MS lose a big chunk of their almost guaranteed monthly revenue, the difference is not necessarily going to be made up by Sales of games - let alone sales of their own. Xbox hardware too is not that prolific so lose 30% of sales revenue to other platforms - like Steam or Playstation.

With cost of living rising, much less disposible income to spend on Games, let alone the cost of games (particularly 'complete' editions, not the bare bones standard edition) and hardware going up too, I struggle to see the sense in MS's decision.

With their Handheld PC and numerous other Handheld PC's and cloud enabled gaming devices, you'd think that MS would be looking to sell GP on those, increase their Subscriber numbers and monthly revenue, but could price themselves out - lose sales to Steam, GoG etc, push people to Playstation etc instead of spending 'money' in their's!!

If they upgraded the games to be 4K/60fps that'd be one thing, but even some of the great ones like Far Cry Primal are sub-1080p. It also makes the games list cluttered with bargain-bin stuff like Monopoly and AC Chronicles.

If it was Ubisoft+ Premium, I would have been pretty excited actually. It'd be my ticket to play Assassin's Creed Shadows and Avatar. Star Wars Outlaws too if I hadn't just bought it. But it's just Ubisoft+ Classics, so a bunch of old games of which I already owned like a third of them. The idea of having to pay $10 more for a bunch of old games seems sus to me

I've played all the Ubisoft games I'm interested in already. I don't want the service, but I really don't want that Fortnite thing.

@AverageJoseph Yeah, the thing I don't get is, why is Microsoft planning to spend millions of dollars to get third-party games on the service day-one, if they don't want anyone to subscribe to Ultimate? It makes no sense, especially since they claim that they're gonna add more day-one games than ever before.

Seems to me Microsoft believes enough people will still pay for Ultimate to make up for the loss in subscribers, while still making more profit than before.

Also, on a related note, the thing about Microsoft reportedly losing $300 million on CoD sales due to Game Pass doesn't really factor in the amount of people who played the game but would not have bought it otherwise. So it's missing a lot of context.

Ubisoft games go dirt cheap very regularly. For example, Skull & Bones is on sale on Steam right now:

• Premium Edition £5.99
• Deluxe Edition £4.49
• Standard Edition £3.49

And every game included on this Ubisoft Classics thing gets deep discounts with alarming regularity. Who in their right mind wants to pay an extra monthly fee for a library of (old) games that you can regularly get for a song? If I was a GPU subscriber, I'd be pretty pissed right about now.

None of the added things are worth a price increase, with removing add-ons we should get a price cut.

I would say though that day one games could be any game. It could be 74, one man studio, 2.99 on release games for all we know.

It wont be, but dont be assuming that they are all hundreds of thousands, millions even, pounds of development cost games.

They will also make money off day one sales again.

@Weebleman Fair enough . I really think that they bought Activision with the intention of making CoD exclusive and putting it on game pass. The courts stopped that and they've been reeling ever since. It's just wildly flailing without much rhyme or reason. Your problem is that you're trying to find some logic here lol

Seems she was right all along and the gamepass changes are just more proof of that.

I personally haven’t spent a dime since the “only 4 games” were announced, I won’t sell my Xbox since I still have many games not easily available elsewhere but I’m avoiding the Microsoft Store like a plague.

@datamonkey Not bnecessarily because EVERY Publisher has done the same thing. The difference between MS and others is perhaps scale and frequency, but they also expanded the most during BOOM.

Job losses were inevitable when you 'merge' 3 identical businesses together, you don't need 3 different Publishing divisions, Payroll Departments, HR, Marketting/Advertising etc all with their own Management etc so that was 'inevitable'. All Publishers have closed down studios, laid off staff, cancelled games etc.

As for those with Hardware, MS isn't the only one to increase Prices. Sony has and reduced specs/quality too but kept the price high. Nintendo are charging more for their games than others and EA Play (£17) and Ubisoft+ Pro (£15) offer day 1 (or some Day 1) in their price so 'Day 1' can't be the issue alone if others offer.

The point is that when MS announced their intention to buy ABK, there was likely to be 'inevitable' Job losses - after a protected time maybe, but still no point employing 3 people to do the SAME job. As for Price Hikes, that too would be inevitable at some point just due to inflation and rising costs - however, I doubt anyone expected the world to go Crazy after coming out of the Pandemic. Certain big regions are now closed off from selling games so no revenue coming in from their anymore, other countries so devastated they aren't able to buy and other regions are struggling to live Hand to mouth with rising costs, tariffs, trade wars, unstable economics and much less disposible income to spend on 'leisure'. That is having an impact on EVERY Publisher so EVERY Publisher is looking at ways to reduce their costs AND/OR increase their revenue. You can say that EVERY publisher is 'guilty' of doing the same thing...

@datamonkey I don't think that's what this is. They aren't in the position to be controlling things, and there are going to be huge consequences from this. They're barely hanging on to what little they built back up after xbone, and the reception to this change is overwhelmingly negative everywhere. They're also not the only one raising prices and laying people off.

They put half their eggs in ABK, but that didn't move players to xbox because they couldn't go exclusive. So their pivot was multiplat, but that actually hurts game pass which is where the rest of their eggs are at.

They couldn't back down from day one games, but that also eats into the cash cow CoD.

They have too many plans pulling in different directions. They're just taking shots in the dark to try to make it all work.

It added absolutely 0 value. I either already own or have played these games and the ones I haven't it would be cheaper to wait for a humble bundle or a publisher sale for most of them to pay the increased cost of game pass for even a month. When the biggest classics you're advertising can be easily purchased for $5 without hunting or waiting for a sale, this is an absolutely ridiculously poor value for a service that was already struggling to have value at it's current price

For the price increase it's not worth it plus I don't play Fortnite at all!!
That said I'm having fun playing the wheel of fortune game and I'm playing through assassin's creed unity for the first time now and loving it!!
I'll at least get a couple of games to play out of it myself🤷

it is a big jump, it depends how you game, i for don't jump into a new game and have to finish it asap. I kind of go in And out of games, Some times can take two years to finish a game, i kind of get my monies worth.

So i don't use game pass really, i might subscribe to try out a really big game I am wanting to buy in case i hate it.

So as a Xbox user this whole game pass thing does not affect me. If i want to play online with a friend Ill buy the lowest tier for a month and play.

I put all the money i have into actually buying the games. whether at launch or later down the road at a discounted price. ..
So yeah Gamepass going up crazy money doesn't really effect me.

But it is a blow to players who play mostly digital and say have bought a series S . GamePass is where they got their fix.
For them I feel it is a bad decision, adding old Ubi games and a Fortnight pass does not really cut it. Its just adding fodder to bulk out a Plan which is now not really worth subscribing to.

I live ubi games, but they raised the price $10 a month. The fortnite thing is useless to me, so I feel like if we sub, were basically getting $5 worth of service for $10. Not a good deal.

Game pass is better for discovering new games and indie titles. Ubisoft classics is the opposite of that. Anyone who had interest in playing these games has already done so.

Like I wrote under one of the 35 Game Pass articles 😜, I bet that Ubisoft's deal cost Microsoft peanuts, perhaps even Ubisoft's licence for Xbox streaming in certain regions is partially related to it. I don't really get the Fortnite deal, because you can play without a subscription and it's part of the most expensive tier, so I'd love to know the numbers behind this. Finally, the pricing that that fan designed doesn't make sense, because the most precious feature is day one access, for users and for Microsoft, because the price on day one per game is €$70 at least (AAA games), more for deluxe editions. Thus, the most valuable perk for users (they save $70 per game) and for Microsoft (they lose $70 per game and user) is access to games at launch.

The good news is that Essential and Premium get Cloud [EDIT: and PC] for the same price. It makes a lot of sense for This is an Xbox, which is great for casual gaming, but free cloud saves and backwards compatibility along Play Anywhere will be the best features for traditional gamers in the long term. It's also possible that they merge PC and console Game Pass eventually and make Play Anywhere mandatory. Right now, the PC plan appears hidden under an arrow on the Xbox site.

TL;DR, I believe that most of the extra cost of Ultimate was decided based on day one access to the greater number of AAA games that Xbox publishes and also because gaming in general (Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo) is getting more expensive. ABK is a factor, too, with Call of Duty being the only exception in the Game Pass plans.

Ubisoft, EA, and Activision all add near zero value for me. Total waste as game pass transforms into the basic cable of gaming.

@Banjo- PC game pass is not long for this world. All the tiers have PC included now. Unless all the rumors about a PC/console hybrid were wrong, and the next xbox is only an actual xbox console, then xbox players could just get PC game pass and circumvent Ultimate. They'll never let that happen. It's not going to go over well with PC only players either.

If you haven't played any of them before, they are some of the best games of all time. But pretty much every one of these games is on sale for $5 or less regularly. I bet every one of them in the current steam sale would cost nearly the same as a couple months of Ultimate. Most gamers have played the ones they want already.

For me this does not add any value to the service. I would rather it not be included. It's inclusion and the price reflection is a major reason why I am no longer an Ultimate subscriber.

My opinion, game pass is like the gamestop/costco console bundles. Here's the console and a bunch of crap a majority of us do not want. Let me pay $5 a month for online play and party chat.

@Weebleman This started as a test with Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2 and Crackdown 3 and it's much bigger now. It's not that it was not sustainable until now, but for Microsoft, Xbox has become macroeconomy, because they have all the Xbox business under the same umbrella: online services, subscriptions, store sales (including lucrative DLC), Play Anywhere, multiplatform releases...

In this context and because gaming is more expensive now on the three consoles, they decided that day one should have a higher price tag, while they are willing to give better value for Essential and Premium adding Cloud and PC for the same price — with the secret plan of discontinuing the PC tier, as AverageJoseph said. The good news is that there are more and better options than ever before. The bad news is that day one access, the top perk in the top tier, is no longer cheap. What they're doing for people joining Game Pass is another thing: the $1 trials are back.

It's fascinating that fortnite and a bunch of old ubisoft games ended up being the difference between "best deal in gaming" and bloated rip-off (for me at least).

I avoid Ubi for the most oart. Zero interest or benefit to me. Same with the FN crew.

@datamonkey read other comments but tldr: Microsoft are not the only company making cuts or raising prices they are just the most recent and to a bigger degree. I mean it was only a couple of month ago that the last PlayStation console price increase was done for example.

This is industry wide and its not just tied to a single company making a large acquisition its bigger and more multifaceted than that.

I know where I would lay some of the blame but I won't discuss politics on a gaming website.

As someone else said this is the equivalent of the basic cable package of 500 channels that you only watch 5 of them and the rest is garbage. If you want movies or sports you pay extra. Nothing more or less….

I own and/or have beaten most of those games on some storefront. There are a couple I could try. Generally, this was not added for me.

A yes the AAAA experience Skull and Bones is indeed a classic. I remember playing that one way back on the Amiga.
All jokes aside. There are some really good games in there for sure, BUT i already have bought all those games that interested me. So the service is pretty much useless for me and therefore doesn't justify the price hike. Also many of these games can be bought for peanuts.

I feel it's akin to getting a complementary pouch of mortar. Like, cool if it comes in handy, but not exactly a stellar value-add and it certainly doesn't compensate for the price hike.

Microsoft's tactics are completely out of the ordinary: it tries to justify the high prices with meaningless additions like Ubisoft classic with old Ubi games that are irrelevant in our time (and you can find them very cheaply on offers), with EA Play, and some trinkets for Fortnite. Who asked for all this? It could at least have a basic version of Ultimate for 20 dollars while having it as an optional choice with an extra cost that can add additional services like EA Play, Ubisoft Classic, and the Fortnite stupid benefits that nobody cares about.

Ultimate currently has EA Play, Ubisoft Classic, 450+ games in the back catalog, while also adding 75+ day one releases every year. It offers a lot of content for a very high price.

So, according to Microsoft new strategy , Ultimate is essentially aimed at very hardcore gamers, the completely burnt-out ones, who play dozens of hours and finish at least 2-3 games every month, to "recoup" the "investment" of 30 dollars in Ultimate. That is, you will have to finish at least 36 of the 72-day one releases to somehow justify the $360 you will pay each year for Ultimate. In the case that you do not belong to the kind of gamer that does not have much time to play continuously and needs more than a month to finish a game, then Ultimate is simply not worth it, because you will pay 60 dollars (almost full price) every two months for a game.

It's incredible value for anyone that has yet to try a lot of Ubi stuff, but for the likes of me, who has played most their stuff, it's not really warranted.

Also, yes, like you said, the focus is on one of the tiers, when the other two have become much better for the same price and when you can buy every single game except the Retro Classics that use streaming. They could tell the truth for once. Ultimate is no longer cheap and, surely, is no longer a great deal for everyone despite its perks, but is there any other subscription with day one access and how much would it cost on PS, despite PS having much fewer first-party releases, using Sony's current pricing as reference? The bias there is so extreme, I haven't seen it elsewhere. Yes, Ultimate is more expensive, but it's not the only option for playing on Xbox as some suggest.

But like I've said before a lot of the criticism isn't just on the company Microsoft/Xbox it's aimed at the users aswell so people are going to respond to that when it's being made out like we are idiots who didn't see a price increase coming obviously not this big but Xbox gamers are being are made out to be idiots when obviously a price increase was coming literally everything in the world is getting more expensive!

@Ricky-Spanish the thing I find most unreal is that they willfully ignore when their platform of choice are raising prices, like it's ok for them to do it but not anyone else. They also have blinkers on with regard to it not happening again in the near future.

My prediction is the other side will see a similar hike probably not this year but certainly before the end of Q1 2026 but hey it just Microsoft who are 💩 and the folks who use their services are a cult!

Sidenote: how many actual Xbox owners with GP ultimate actually play Fortnight? I don't play anything mp or mp online, I only realized Fortnite was available for Xbox with this new GP announcement, been a US Xbox player since inception, never FN mentioned in any context with Xbox.(Also never played Fortnite, so I may have no clue what I am talking about)

The impact is dampened by the fact that half the games were already on Game Pass before this announcement. Most of the Far Cry and Assassin Creed games were at least. The games that weren’t are very old and could be picked up for cheap in seasonal sales. It’s not all that exciting.

At least it guarantees Star Wars Outlaws will come to Game Pass eventually, but my Ultimate will probably have expired by then - I only have it until March next year and then I plan to transition to Essential.

These games are worthless, they are always on sale for mere pennies. Why even call it "Ubisoft+ classics" when they could have just added the games normally to game pass. They're confusing everyone trying to make them believe this is the regular Ubisoft+ service.

@miharin Right, most games are old and cheap, but Ubisoft already had Ubisoft Classics for old games (€$8). The other one is Ubisoft Premium (€$18). Game Pass Ultimate already had EA Play ($€6), not EA Play Pro (€$17), and now they added Ubisoft Classics, on top of Fortnite Crew (€$12).

Old ubi games are a dime a dozen. Shrug.

I could own the entire Ubisoft Classic library in perpetuity for $25 on a year end sale sooooo no. Not worth the GP addition and price hike.

I always evade ubisoft. I don't play games made by EA or Ubisoft.

I feel nothing because, after three years, I'm no longer subscribed to Ultimate.

Microsoft could let you play every Xbox game as part of their ultimate subscription and it still wouldn't be worth it. $30 per month is too much unless you have all the time in the world, which most subscribers likely do not have.

As I already pay for Ubi+ I am now getting double charged.

Either played or own most of (best of) them, therefore it is meaningless to me.

@Ricky-Spanish You seem to be taking this all very personally, both here and PS, honestly to the point that its probably worth taking a break if you are getting that bothered by it.

For my take I don't see it as people wholesale gleefully calling Xbox users idiots. Outside of obvious trolls, the only comments that come close are people who predicted this coming and feel it was foolish to think otherwise. These same people were also called idiots and doomers for daring to predict anything negative about MS's future plans.

Just try not to get so invested, as its not healthy

So if we take the 6.99 for core off for those that play on console it should now dawn on you the idiot with the spreadsheet (the accountant) thinks this is an amazing deal as that makes the xbox cost the same as PC in terms of the uplift.
