Last week, we put out a talking point on Xbox and PlayStation's big August crossover as Gears Reloaded launched on PS5 and Helldivers 2 arrived on Xbox Series X|S - and another step from the two companies' social media teams is making folks question whether the "console wars" are truly over.
In recent days, Xbox has changed its social media banners to advertise PlayStation's Helldivers 2, while Sony has changed theirs to advertise Xbox's Gears Reloaded. A year-or-so ago this would have seemed truly impossible - it's actually kind of wild to see it happen in front of our eyes.
Of course, these are just social media banners and the games themselves launching on rival platforms is most important - but it does show a shift in the overall stance around locked-down console ecosystems. Sony looks like its slowly opening up, following Microsoft's all-hands-on-deck approach to going full multiplatform in recent months.
This revelation has also been shared over in the Xbox subreddit, leading to plenty of discussion on the banners and what they mean for the future of Microsoft and Sony co-operation. Overall, at least on the Xbox side of things, the reaction to this has been quite positive - with fans largely happy that they can play their favourite games across a whole manner of different systems.
We have to agree with this sentiment - this last week has been fantastic with Helldivers 2 finally gracing Xbox platforms, and PS5 fans getting stuck into Gears of War: Reloaded on their system of choice. We'll have to see what the future holds, but for now, there does seem to be at least a tactical retreat from what was once known as the 'console wars'.
