Back at the end of August, we mentioned how one of the "worst games ever" was getting remastered in a beautiful new collection for Xbox - that game being Bubsy 3D as part of the new Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection release.

It's out right now on the Xbox Store if you're interested, although the reviews have been pretty mixed so far. That's really not a massive surprise though, as none of the included games were ever exactly considered stone-cold classics.

In fact, looking through the reviews, the collection itself isn't getting much criticism. Most outlets seem to think Limited Run Games has done a good job here, but mileage varies in terms of whether the games are worth playing.

Here's a look at some of the early reviews for Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection:

Noisy Pixel (6.5/10)

"Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection is a lovingly curated yet brutally honest preservation of one of gaming’s most chaotic mascots. Packed with extras and accessibility features, it faithfully captures every quirky, frustrating, and occasionally charming moment of Bubsy’s retro reign, frustration and all."

Console Creatures (6/10)

"Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection is full of lacklustre platformers and a set of bonus features that are hit and miss. It’s hard to wholeheartedly recommend this wacky collection if you’re not already a huge fan of this cartoon feline."

Nintendo Life (4/10)

"Picture this: some kid in 1993 got Bubsy for Christmas after the sales clerk told his parents that Sonic and Mario were old hat, and this was the hot new thing. That kid either never forgave his parents for the injustice and the playground bullying they endured as a result, or they committed fully to the Bubsy universe and found a happy place within it. If you’re the latter, then this collection is for you. And only for you."

What's perhaps most important is that the collection has a "Positive" rating over on Steam right now, with lots of dedicated Bubsy fans highlighting how they're really enjoying it so far.

Again, here are some examples of those Steam reviews:

KimoWolf on Steam: "This collection is worth it. There's a ton of bonus content that's an absolute joy to peruse and B3DRF is a wild time that despite its jank due to the patchwork nature of the hack making modern controls possible (rendering viewpoint hasn't changed so expect strange rendering pop-in; Bubsy has some momentum quirks) makes for a very fun alternate take on playing B3D, and is especially recommended if you wanted to play the game but were turned off by the tank controls."

Fell on Steam: "What could possibly go wrong? Apparently only the common crime of getting your ears blasted but with no volume control for the main menu itself!!!! Seriously devs, please add a slider for the menu. @.@ Otherwise this feels like a collection done absolutely right, with care put into playability for a modern audience and a cheeky understanding of the source. What a precursor to a comeback with 4D in 2026, I wish other old games that received collections had half the QoL this one does."

So, it sounds like you'll need to be a bit of a mega-fan in order to enjoy Bubsy in: The Puurfect Collection to its fullest, but it's a great package if you fall into that category (for the most part).

The good news is that it's priced very reasonably on the Xbox Store, available to buy right now for just £16.74 / $19.99 for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

But can Bubsy truly be described as a blast from the past? We'll let you be the judge of that.
