Today, Microsoft announced the official release date for the ROG Xbox Ally (it's October 16th), but neglected to mention anything about price or pre-orders, stating that more information on those would be revealed in the coming weeks.
Why? Well, speaking to IGN today, Xbox exec Jason Ronald explained that it's difficult to "find the right balance between affordability and price point" in a "challenging" macro-economic climate, and therefore the team needs more time.
"This is always a challenge... and you always try to find the right balance between affordability and price point, and I think especially in a mobile form factor that also adds in dimensions such as battery life in as well. And then, as you said, the macro-economic climate is challenging."
"I think we will have to... we need more time to figure the macro-economic impact to pricing, and that's why we'll be sharing more later, in September and October."
Just a few hours before the release date was announced, reliable leaker billbil-kun shared the apparent "final prices" for the ROG Xbox Ally handheld(s) in the US, so it seems some prices had been set in stone prior to today's announcement.
Will they now change over the coming weeks? That's what remains to be seen, and here's hoping we don't have to wait too long to find out more - after all, this thing is coming out in less than 60 days!
