One of the biggest surprises during showcase season this year was the reveal of Resident Evil Requiem as part of Summer Game Fest 2025. Capcom gave us a tease at what it's building for the next mainline Resi title during the Geoff Keighley show, and while the initial trailer was light on details, some fresh info has now been revealed.
As mentioned in numerous previews, including over on the official Xbox Wire blog, Resident Evil Requiem will indeed be playable in both first and third-person when it launches in February 2026. It doesn't sound like the third-person mode has been tacked on either, as Xbox Wire says there's not a "true" way you need to play the game:
"Your choice to play in first or third person (and you can switch at any time) might alter how you view all this, but the results are the same. Capcom’s clearly put a huge amount of work into making neither choice feel like the “true” way to play. Animations have been tweaked for both perspectives to help it feel natural, never breaking the fearful spell it casts as you quietly pick your way through this truly ominous place."
There are also a few new screenshots doing the rounds today, some of which you view down below:
In terms of what's been officially shared by Capcom so far (beyond the 30-minute behind-closed doors preview that took place at Summer Game Fest), details are pretty scarce - but we do have a brief introduction to the game now that's it's available to wishlist. We'll throw that official synopsis down below:
"Requiem for the dead. Nightmare for the living. Resident Evil Requiem is the ninth title in the mainline Resident Evil series. Prepare to escape death in a heart-stopping experience that will chill you to your core. Technological advancements combined with the development team's depth of experience combine in a story with rich characters and gameplay that's more immersive than ever before. A new era of survival horror begins in 2026."
Of course, the reveal trailer also accompanies this summary in terms of official developer details, and you can check out that early look at Resident Evil Requiem footage in our "related story" down below.
We'll also leave you with a bit of IGN's preview of the game, which gave them a chance to sample a tiny sliver of the full thing ahead of its launch next year. Here's how they concluded their impressions:
"With Resident Evil Requiem, you no longer have to make the choice between first-person and third-person perspective, something Capcom flirted with when it released a third-person option as DLC for Resident Evil Village. While the balance between horror and action naturally shifts depending on the perspective, my main takeaway is that Resident Evil Requiem was exciting to play in either mode, and looks to continue Capcom's strong string of game releases."
