We're super close to the launch of Far Cry 6 and we're learning more about the next-gen enhancements for the game. While Xbox Series X|S owners are set to receive various features, it seems ray tracing will not be one of them.
In an interview with Wcctech, lead programmer Stephanie Brenham spoke about what benefits Xbox Series X|S (and PS5) players will and won't be getting. Unfortunately, ray tracing is said to be a PC only feature, as the team has focused on delivering 4K/60FPS experience on next-gen consoles.
"Ray tracing is a PC only feature. On console, our objective has been to take advantage of new hardware capabilities, optimizing performance targeting 4K and achieving 60 FPS, for instance, all while ensuring new game features, like our dynamic weather system, are supported on all platforms."
It's not all bad news, as it's been confirmed anyone playing on next-gen systems will benefit from "better LODs, draw distances, better ocean simulation and HD textures". Still, it would have been nice to see Ubisoft push the boat out and bring ray tracing to the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 release.
Far Cry 6 will leverage Smart Delivery on Xbox when it launches on October 7, and Ubisoft has a wild roadmap of post-launch content for the game in the works, including a Stranger Things crossover.
Not long to go!

So basically are they saying current consoles can't achieve 4k 60fps with Ray tracing? Or are they saying they are just too lazy to optimise
@SplooshDmg, what I came on here to say ! I even I think I'd rather play a 1080 30fps with RT
What I can't understand is that with dynamic scaling can't they just let the frame rate drop to a minimum of 1080, maybe a maximum of 1800 (so there isn't that dramatical a changed between resolution), keep Ray tracing even at 60fps
I'm simplifying a lot, but would have imagined that Ray tracing was an on off switch? (I think pc games have that sort of thing) And wouldn't dynamic resolution be a Min Max slider anyway, one which the developer would have access to?
@UltimateOtaku91 the recommended specs on PC are a 3080 at 4K30fps and RT on, or a 3070 at 1440p 60fps and RT on and neither of these consoles are anywhere near those cards capabilities.
I do think they should offer an RT mode even if its 30fps but I don't think Ubisoft games in general are well optimised
@carlos82 ah I see, originally I thought that was one of the main new features of the new consoles being Ray tracing but if they are going to struggle with it then that's not good, definitely a reason why we will see an upgraded series/ps5 model in a few years to achieve this
Agreed Ubi games aren't that well optimised - I'd happily play at 30fps for RT at 4K like in WD Legion as I prefer resolution and graphics to refresh rate (I know unlike most people).
Seems a few big games aren't well optimised - Life is Strange True Colours for example as loading screens between buildings that take almost as long as the old games on the One. I know the assets are higher res and so bigger to load, but the wait times are a bit ridiculous for next gen.
The new tech Microsoft have done with AMD (rather than the brute force DLSS alternative FidelityFX) can use the ML cores they added to the Series consoles - I'm hoping it's brought in ASAP and used for most games, as it seems a major boost to frame rates similar or potentially better than the current DLSS versions
As long as it’s 60fps, I don’t give a damn

That's the technology - using the Tensor cores MS talked about when unveiling the Series consoles. Hopefully we'll get it soon - ish once they combine it with their own DLSS-style work
@UltimateOtaku91 realistically their capabilities are around a 2060 maybe 2060s at best, this is mainly due to AMD's rather lacklustre RT capabilities. For example in Control using next gen console settings (basiclly low), or as close as I can get as there as RT reflection resolution is lower than on PC, my 3070ti will run the game between 80 and 90fps. I had a Series X earlier in the year before upgrading my PC and I was a bit shocked how far behind they are with RT
So already even cross gen games can't achieve 4k 60fps and ray tracing lol
Not that I'm overly fussed
This is slightly off topic but will Skyrim get ray tracing?
I’ll always take 4k/60 over 4K/30+RT or 1080p/60+RT, but it’s odd they are not adding those at launch.
Maybe we get them post launch, but by now they likely have enough data from Valhalla and Watch Dogs to be sure 4k/60 is the primary mode to support at launch.
@StylesT I know, the shock that $500 dollar consoles can’t do 4k/60+RT the way a simple and “accessible” $1500 graphic card can!
And Series S? If I'm stuck playing 1080p might as well slap some RT on it.
Metro Exodus took a hell of a resolution hit but it still has RT at 60 on the S so don't tell me it can't be done, Ubi.
Don't mind it that much. I mean it's not like my pc is gonna be able to handle raytracing anyway lol.
I guess you have to set expectations based on the cost of an Xbox Vs a PC which would cost up to 3 times as much to get highest performance possible
@XxEvilAshxX don't ever expect raytracing on the series S in a reasonable manner. the gpu is just severely underclocked compared to the X and a PS5. RE8 showed how poorly that goes. hell, even the PS5 struggled on that front.
It's the lack of effort that gets me. I always count far cry, assassin's creed and just cause as my fav go to games
When the rest of the world seems to be all about about CoD, BF and FIFA every year, I always defend my franchises, and with money, support them, to the hilt, but this lack of OPTIONS eg 1080, 30fps, RT has really, REALLY, got my goat
I love my XSX and I dont care about FarCry serie.
but as always " its going to be revolutionary, most powerful console ever, 4K, 120FPS" and we got caught again in their marketing lies.We got a great system, but still, we have to make compromises between resolution or frame rate or visual quality.
PC again, takes the lead if you have 1000$ to waste on an overpriced graphic card.
Not surprised. This is sensible optimisation from the dev.
Ray Tracing is super expensive. Their recommended PC settings for 4K + Ray tracing at only 30fps is an RTX 3080... that is a £1,050 GPU!
Their recommended PC settings for 1440p + Ray tracing at 60fps is an RTX 3070... at £470 that costs more than the Series X for the GPU only.
Yes the next gen systems are powerful but they are not up to that task, nor should they be, they offer a fantastic balance of price to performance but are not 100% bleeding edge.
@misterfpga Consoles are ALWAYS going to be a compromise unless you want them to cost £1,000+.
The whole point of a console is that they can offer a good BALANCE between price and performance.
There are no marketing lies there. It is 'the most powerful console' (though that's no surprise) and there ARE games that play at 4K 120fps, hell The Touryst renders at 6K on Series X!
But for the most graphically demanding titles DEVELOPERS will usually choose to make smart compromises to deliver the best looking game they can on console. In this case turning Ray tracing off to play at 4K/60fps. It's sensible.
If you're unhappy with that and want absolutely bleeding edge technology then buy a PC. Just hope you have the cash for it... an RTX 3080 GPU retails at £1,050 and you also need a CPU, PSU, motherboard, ram, OS, case, keyboard, mouse and much more...
