Cyberpunk 2077 just can’t seem to catch a break and the latest news seems to suggest its planned Xbox Series X|S upgrade may not arrive this year after all.
As transcribed by VGC, CD Projekt’s H1 2021 results call with shareholders shed some light on Cyberpunk 2077’s future on next-gen systems. While it’s still targeting a release later this year, senior vice president of business development Michał Nowakowski added that the company “can’t say with full certainty that the production schedule will not change”.
“The target is to release the next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 late this year. At the same time, keeping in mind the lessons we have learned during the past year and taking into account that this project still remains in development, we can’t say with full certainty that the production schedule will not change.”
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which is also getting an Xbox Series X|S upgrade, also appears to be in the same boat, as CD Projekt similarly couldn’t commit to a 2021 release window.
“With The Witcher 3, the situation is slightly different in the way that this is being tackled by the external team mainly, which is Saber Interactive, the company that we have worked with before on Switch and also with updates in the past. As with Cyberpunk 2077, our goal is to release that game still in late 2021. However, similarly, the development process is ongoing, and we cannot be absolutely dead certain that the release schedule will not change.”
Despite the uncertainty, Nowakowski did say the company is “definitely aiming with both titles for late 2021”, but didn't want to be more specific at this time.
Cyberpunk 2077 recently started branching out into delivering free DLC to players, after months and months of bug fixes. The company believes the game is now at a satisfactory level, but according to an analysis by Digital Foundry, there is still plenty of work to be done.
As it stands, there’s no roadmap for Cyberpunk 2077, outside of vague windows such as 'late 2021' for the next-gen release. We'd like to see a more concrete schedule, but given the game’s history, we can understand the vagueness.
Will you be sad to see Cyberpunk 2077 not launch on Xbox Series X|S this year? Drop us a comment and let us know.

@Xenomorph_79 It is a very evident case of sunk cost fallacy at this point.
It’s amazing with just one game how a studio can go from hero to zero and lose all of that good reputation built over many years.
I’ll still play this when the Series X version does eventually release but I think a lot of people will have just moved on by then.
Hopefully this will be a lesson learned not only just for CDPR but for other devs too to deliver on a game which as been hyped to hell.
I dont think theres a game I wish wouldve just launched on next gen and nothing else more. Maybe then it wouldnt have been so buggy. But on the other hand I still found this game to be extremely boring.
I still can't wait for the Series X update of CyberPunk. I have been holding off on this game until its update comes out and am super excited to play it because i love games like this!
They spent an enormous amount of time and resources on this game, tried to overplay their hand by making it for every console, panicked, cut 50% of the projected content and screwed over everyone. This is not No Mans Sky 2.0, - its time to admit failure and focus on Witcher 4
I'm much more excited about Saber Interactive's updated version of The Witcher 3 than Cyberpunk 2077. Cyberpunk should just disappear already and focus on their next thing which hopefully can save their reputation. Nothing can change that game.
Snagged it for 10 bucks last week and will happily keep in stashed in the closet until the next gen patches drop (any probably wait longer since they'll most likely release broken). Can't imagine how low morale probably is as CDPR right now
@OliverOwen i bought the game played it for 30 hours stopped and im waiting on the upgrade(And bugs to be squashed) to finish the game.
@Blessed_Koz I pre-ordered it and have yet to start it. Super excited to start and finish it completely!!!
@Rural-Bandit I did one playthrough and found it to be boring. The game has no cutscenes which meant that during a lot of exposition and future planning all I could do was stand still and watch npcs talk. Another problem here is that I never see Vs reactions which ultimatly lead to me not caring about the main character. Other drawbacks is that Night City feels extremely empty outside of quests thus leaving me with no motivation to explore. Vs phone is also bombarded with phone calls which got annoying real quick. On the other hand a friend of mine loved everything I found boring about it so at the end of the day its a matter of taste.
I got it at launch, more fool me, and have enjoyed it. But I stopped playing thinking I'll wait for the new gen patch. I'll probably keep on waiting lol. The Ascent has wetted my appetite at what it could look like!
Surprised not. I got on release. Installed it. Updated 20+ Gb and saw how it ran😯. I will wait CDPR for the series X/S upgrade. I believe there's a game in there somewhere.
yeah meh - what a waste of a game.
I've been watching my mum play on PS5, and it looks okay. Just...okay.
@JohannVanDerSmut
You've just described 99% of games.
I absolutely love cyberpunk 2077 but the developers should have made it a next generation game instead of trying to cater to the ps4 and Xbox one players,it plays beautifully on the Xbox one x and the pc,the more they try to improve the game the more they mess it up,the developers took away a lot of the really cool glitches in the game, and now I’m starting to loose interest in my most anticipated video game ever
