If you were hoping to start playing Microsoft Flight Simulator on Xbox Series X and Series S as soon as possible, we've got some bad news, as Asobo Studio has pushed out an immediate 27GB update for the game.
You'll need to download this before you can start playing Flight Sim in any fashion, as even the offline mode requires you to have been connected to the internet at least once before you can turn it on. Sad times!
We're assuming there are no other downloads aside from the 27GB update, and hopefully the servers will be able to cope with the immense demand that will be placed on them this evening. What's a flight without a delay, eh?
How are you going to pass the time for the next few hours? Let us know down in the comments below.

Was going to play this tonight but now having to wait another hour and 50 minutes I probably not......back to work tomorrow so I probably not have energy to play untill weekend now ...sigh
Yea bit of a bummer when you load it up at 4pm and then that hits. I even loaded it up earlier to make sure it was all good and nothing
Automatic updates so I'll be good to go when I get home tonight. People will have to get used to this game having heavy updates - its the nature of this game.
Yeah nasty shock, have to wait another hour now.
Yo this ruined my mood 😭
Was just about to boot it up, why didn't the update start automatically as well....
My internet speed is all over the place. I’m currently at 80% with 200+Mbps then suddenly dropping to nothing then back up to 200+Mbps. The game must really be popular for this to be happening.
For all of you blissfully going through life not knowing that Most games come with a day one update... How do you do it? It should just be engrained in your brain that there is a day one update on every game you play that is large like this.
That's really annoying. I just went to play it. Then it started this update. What's the point in pre installing then
I’m currently in the game’s menu then after pressing next it has took me to the ‘installation manager’ screen which has been checking for updates for the last 5 minutes and there’s still no change…
I have a feeling this will be like CoD with constant big updates
Taking over 10 minutes to boot the game after the update in my series a
The loading bar is filled to the max but the game doesn't start...
Kind of defeats the purpose of preloading.
Update downloaded but now can’t get past loading screens 🙄
Just FYI all, this still doesn't include the 5 World Update packages - you need to go into the marketplace in game to download those 😬
They don't list the sizes until you start downloading, but I've got them all going now and it's roughly an extra 30GB, so you're looking somewhere in the region of 150-60GB if you want all the bells and whistles. UK world update was only 6GB though!
@SteveButler2210 Can these install with the console in standby?
@Talkshowhost I have no idea to be honest with you! You'd hope they've found a way to make that work, but I'm midflight at the mo and there doesn't seem to be a way to check install progress unless you're in the main menu. Sorry!
@InterceptorAlpha I am frustrated like most but being able to preload 97gbs helps.
@SteveButler2210 I was flying for about an hour and it seemed there was no progress on the downloads whilst I was playing.
How appropriate airlines willing to lie about arrival and departure times (George Carlin, anyone?). That's why my console is on standby all the time. When I get home everything will be ready to go.
@Alan_cartridge_ Unfortunately, for quite a few people such as myself it doesn't help. The 29 GB might as well be 100GB as the 27GB download will eat up the minimal free time I have to play just as well as a larger size would.
@gollumb82 So you hope. Microsoft still has yet to fix the download issue that results in games not being updated until you actually launch them. Instant on with background downloads on, or otherwise.
Who knew they'd simulate the delays too
@SteveButler2210 Thanks for letting us know about having to manually install the world updates on our own. As I posted in the other MSFS article, I was flying through New York City and the detail on the Statue of Liberty looked very flat as does the football stadiums around the UK like Old Trafford and St James Park were just flat burly models!
@InterceptorAlpha I don't disagree, I am still downloading as we speak. I like most work full time 👍 trust me when I tell you I am as disappointed as most with the beefy DL. It was more a silver lining type comment.
@InterceptorAlpha
Yup, with flying you gotta have a lot of hope It worked wonders when I was playing Cyberpunk at launch and beyond. Fingers crossed then.
Yeah this ******** sucked. So much for playing this tonight after all. I thought this gen was supposed to be the gen without the nonsense updates whenever one tries to boot up a game. Lame to the nth degree.
I'll get over it, just irritated that this next gen will end up the same as the last one. The update generation.
There is NO WAY I start this journey without EVERYTHING installed on my SSD, world packages and all.
I'll be patient, it's ok.
I want THE FULL experience, for this one !!
Xbox really needs to sort out auto-updates. Checked yesterday that this had predownloaded and thought I was good to go today. Turned on to play this evening and it has to ask first if I want the 27GB update.
That’s a terrible user experience.
Similar happens if you try to download via the app with an external connected as your default location. It doesn’t actually download but waits till you boot up the system to ask where you want to install. This really should be a pre-set option somewhere.
It’s one of the few things that the PS5 does far better at a system level. Everything just updates in the background, and soon after launch. E.g. Genshin impact started auto-downloading the big new 2.0 update about 10 mins after it was launched and was ready to play as soon as the console was turned on. That’s a better user experience.
It’s a minor annoyance, but still an annoyance. Don’t make us wait hours to play unnecessarily MS.
@SplooshDmg yeah I saw the thread with Jason & John Linnerman (from Digital Foundry).
It just surprises me there aren’t a few settings, MS is usually really good at this. But currently the user experience is not great. All too often I finish work, boot up a game and it makes you wait to update it. Sometimes I wonder what’s the point of an ssd that boots in seconds if you have to wait minutes or hours for a download… a net loss.
Similarly with the app. I see a game here or elsewhere and go onto the app and choose to download it. But when I finish work and boot up the Xbox it hasn’t downloaded at all. Instead it just asks which drive you want to download to, and again you then have to wait. (Happens when you have external drives connected and set to default location)
It’s a software issue so I’m sure it will improve but currently it’s needless friction. Just give us a few toggles e.g.
I’m complaining because I want it to be better and it easily can be, the code/logic is easy. Really happy with almost everything else on the series X but this is consistently frustrating!
@Talkshowhost (and PSA for everyone else reading) I've checked this morning and the World Update packs don't appear to continue downloading while the console is in rest mode. In my case, this is because the game wasn't placed in quick resume, and had quit instead - if quick resume works for you then I guess you might get lucky!
Even less intuitively, the downloads had not re-started automatically when I re-opened the client - I had to go back through the menus and manually re-start all five downloads.
I've now settled for just leaving the console turned on all morning with the game running and hoping the downloads finish by lunch!
Loving the game itself so far (did a few discovery flights and the first leg of a bush trip last night), but man did they really not go out of their way to make it easy to get everything installed on console…
