We've pretty much resigned ourselves at this point to the fact that a potential Sunset Overdrive sequel would likely never reach Xbox, but nevertheless the game's co-director says he'd be very interested in making one.
Speaking to GQ earlier this week, Insomniac Games' Marcus Smith reaffirmed to the outlet that the company owns the IP, and while a sequel doesn't appear on the cards right now, he would personally "love to return to it."
"I mean, never say never is my approach. Obviously, we’re part of Sony now, but we own the IP and so there’s nothing really stopping us other than we have a lot of really exciting things in our future."
"I think there are a lot of stories that can be told in that universe and I would love to return to it. I had a lot of fun making that game."
If you haven't been keeping up, Insomniac Games was acquired by PlayStation Studios back in 2019, and while we have recently seen Sony San Diego's MLB The Show series make the jump to a multi-platform release, it seems very, very unlikely that anything Insomniac does in the future will make its way to Xbox.
Just last week, it appeared as though Sony had trademarked the Sunset Overdrive IP, suggesting something might be on the horizon. However, based on Smith's comment, it sounds like the team is busy with other things for now.
Do you think a potential Sunset Overdrive 2 could ever make its way to Xbox? Give us your thoughts below.

Pardon my ignorance, but why would anyone even entertain the idea that a sequel would ever be on Xbox.
Insomniac are a Sony studio, and Sony are known to play and share(well)with others as hungry lions do with cheetahs at feeding time. 😉
Well apparently I'm the only one who actually loved the game and thought it was brilliant. Definitely one of the best games I've played on Xbox One and one of the most fun games I've ever played in general. Would love to see a sequel!
I remember it being one of those early Xbox One exclusives, kind of an interesting game, some neat concepts, kind of a blend of Sonic games and R&C. I just never really got into it is all, and it's been years since I last played the game.
Honestly I always thought Insomniac peaked with the original Spyro trilogy, those are easily among my all time favorite platformers. R&C never really did it for me, nor did anything else they did later, although they did always have a great quality to their games. Now they are pretty much the Spiderman guys for Sony. If I would like to see them bring back and old IP it would have to be Resistance. No point in bringing out a Sunset Overdrive sequel to a different platform.
@SegataSanshiro Totally agree with you, I feel the same way.
@LtSarge I also loved it. Admittedly, it took a bit for it to fully click with me. But once it did, I couldn’t stop playing. Brilliant game, in my opinion at least.
@LtSarge you’re not alone. I thought it was awesome.
That's fine I will be to busy playing Bethesda games.
Well, I won't miss it, at ALL. I actually still have the game installed on my Xbox One S, but I honestly have no idea why.
I've tried the game out more than once, but even though I really like the premise and the overall style and aesthetics of the game, I truly, truly HATE the controls. In the heat of the moment I've often found myself jumping back to the exact same ledge that I just jumped off from, only to bump into those damn aliens/infected.
Suffice to say that the gameplay mechanics didn't click with me at all. And in all these frenetic moments, I only ended up getting more and more frustrated with it all. And seeing as I feel that games should be fun, entertaining and an ESCAPE from frustration, rather than an additional frustration, it soon became part of the archived games list that I never revisit again.
@SegataSanshiro might be weird but didn't think you wouldn't have an interest in kpop looking at your name.
@Sol4ris Sunset Overdrive was an Xbox exclusive when it launched. Which is why some may have had an idea that a future sequel would either be an Xbox exclusive, or at least be available on Xbox. But Insomniac has been bought out since the original launched, so as the article says, it's likely that a sequel would be Playstation exclusive.
Would be a weird state of affairs to have the original launch exclusively on one platform, and then a short time later, launch a sequel exclusively on another platform, it splits the fandom quite a bit, especially as people often tend to stick to their platforms.
If a sequel exists and it comes to xbox I might check it out. I played a few hours of it and while I had fun, I wouldn’t care to play the sequel that much.
@SegataSanshiro yeah nah for sure, didn't know who he was because I didn't game back then so I had to look it up a few weeks ago but thanks for the history lesson. Haven't actually watched any commercials before but these are mad funny hahah. Only said what I said because I figured there might be an asian connection going on between liking Segata and kpop, but to each his own.
Really digging your new pf btw.
Surprised so many people are “meh” on this game. I actually think this was one of the best games of last generation. Such a refreshing take on a shooter. I actually thought it was better than Spiderman, and I’d take a sequel to Sunset Overdrive over Spiderman any day. I’m definitely hoping this gets made.
I loved sunset. It's rough, but great. Insomniac has always thrilled, really up until spiderman which is basically sunset x Arkham without any of the fun.... It's the first game from them that's disappointed me. Purely by the numbers to sate the Disney license.
@SegataSanshiro Interesting you'd mention inFamous. I too noticed an infamous vibe, and I'm a huge inFamous fan (rip, sucker punch is gonna be stuck in Jimbo's content mill of GoT forever), and I really noticed the infamous formula in spiderman. It's like insomniac copied SPs template and SP went to something new. They still make one of the most fun series around with R&C, though, so I can't stay angry. Personally the PS4 reboot was one of my favorite last gen games. I couldn't put it down, it was just crazy fun shooter action.
I think I bought my 1x during the post r&c apathy spell on PS4.
Q) Do you think a potential Sunset Overdrive 2 could ever make its way to Xbox?
A) PC is a possibility but I doubt we'll see a Sunset Overdrive 2 pop up on Xbox Series X... which is a real shame as I had a blast with the game. I didn't buy an Xbox One until it came out, getting the crystal white Xbox One with Sunset Overdrive downloaded onto it.
I love the flow of the game and the combined platforming + shooting felt great. It was a ton of fun striking down hoards, the tower defence mechanics were lovely and the style and humour were fantastic. My only major compliant was that it's fun and crazy protagonist had too much personality; didn't gel well with the create-a-character approach.
@SegataSanshiro We don't talk about All 4 One. It didn't happen. I CAN'T HEAR YOU LALALALALA
@SegataSanshiro I know better than to actually watch a video game move. When I want to do that I just play Naughty Dog games.
Except the SMB movie. That thing is so horrible it's absolutely beautiful.
Sunset Overdrive 2 'could' come to the 'Xbox' ecosystem - even if its 'unlikely'. I don't think its likely that Insomniac will return to SO in the 'near' future but I think they would perhaps need to remake/remaster the first for Playstation users.
With the first on Xbox, Sony 'could' opt to release a sequel on other platforms - especially one that has an 'established' user base. I know that a year or so ago, it would be unheard of for Sony to consider releasing games on other platforms, BUT times change. MLB21 'could' show Sony that releasing 'applicable' games on Xbox is lucrative and successful.
Of course I don't expect the 'established' first party games to release, but if its 'right' for Sony, I can see them doing so. Its not too different from MS and various IP's they own. Sony may also want to 'give' something to receive titles too.
It maybe an outside and slim chance, but I think there is a chance. 5yrs ago, I would have said 'no chance'...
@BAMozzy I can't wait for the BluePoint remake for $70
I don't see Sony putting SO2 on Xbox if they make it. I do think putting it on PC, would be a guarantee, though I can't see them playing with the MS store or Game Pass/Cloud. However, I wouldn't rule out some sort of deal making behind the scenes where Sony delivers some of their non-brand-identity (Kratos, Drake, Ratchet, etc) content to Xbox in exchange for Bethesda content and the like on PlayStation.
@SegataSanshiro Forget the goombas, Yoshi wins the Oscar for the category of "Best IDKWTF." It's always a strange dichotomy, where filming that movie basically induced Hoskins into the alcoholism that killed him, and Leguizamo is like "best movie ever!" and still does fan conventions with it.
One of Microsoft's biggest mistakes last gen was not locking up Insomniac. Luckily, Phil seems to understand the importance this round.
@Trmn8r Technically, I think Insomniac ended up in the right hands. Their biggest, most well regarded titles were long-time PS exclusives. Non-PS Insomniac would be a fish out of water like non-Nintendo Rare. The only shame to Insomniac's fate is that they got saddled with the guaranteed-to-be-middling licensed Spiderman series. The games are decent fun, but they're well below the kind of thrill I expect from Insomniac. But they were working on that before the buyout IIRC.
The real big tragedy of Xbox past was letting Bioware fall to EA. Bioware had zero affiliation with EA, and all of their post-Interplay/Black Isle was born and raised inside Microsoft. Mass Effect, Jade Empire, early development on Dragon Age: Origins actually started back with Black Isle, continued with MS, but ended with EA. All those games could have been Xbox brands. That was their core brands they let fall to EA.
An the ultimate irony is Interplay/Black Isle proper ended up at Xbox anyway in their inExile & Obsidian forms. It could have been the whole package deal.
@NEStalgia True they were traditionally a sony developer. Just would've been a big blow to swipe them away. A shame Sunset Overdrive didn't get the attention it deserved... I think Rare is finally returning to respectable form again with Sea of Thieves being very successful and Everwild looks very promising. It's been a bumpy road for them though falling pretty far from their former glory with Nintendo. Good call out on Bioware though for sure. I'd love to see Jade Empire come back.
