Codemasters' Dirt 5 is one of many highly-anticipated Xbox Game Pass titles that have entered the service already so far this year, and according to the game's director, its inclusion has been a massive success for the game.
Speaking as part of the GameOnDaily podcast, technical director David Springate explained that the game saw "shockingly huge" player numbers as a result, describing the Game Pass decision as "absolutely fantastic":
"It's been absolutely fantastic. Just fantastic. In terms of player counts, I'm not going to give a number because I'm sure I'll get it wrong, but it was shockingly huge. It was crazy. We were really pleased to see that level of engagement, it was really great to see how that had such a positive effect on the game and the way it's talked about.
That continues as well, in that [Dirt 5 on] Game Pass obviously had an initial massive push, but it's sustained. Obviously it's not the same on the second week, but it's still going and we're still seeing really great numbers, so we're super pleased."
Dirt 5 first launched on Xbox Game Pass back in February after releasing as an Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S launch title in November 2020, being made available for console, PC and cloud on the service.
It looks like it's set to stay there for a quite while too, as Codemasters was recently acquired by EA, so we're assuming many of those games will end up on EA Play eventually, Dirt 5 included. It's a win-win all around, then!

Soon all third party studios will support bringing their games on gamepass.
It may lead to situation where it would better to release game on game pass and capitalize on it with decent dlc.
I'm still waiting to play this. My goal is to finish all the races in FH4 and then give it the boot for this. But then again my goal is to play a lot of games that i seem to be having a hard time getting around to... typical gamepass issues i guess.
@Lajt so long as they don't get to a point where they release a subpar game just to sell DLC which normally would be the game
I think it's better for a developer to put their game on gamepass whilst also selling it full price on other platforms (in this case ps4/ps5) as they are still taking in a load of cash from sales. But in the future for games to be purely on a subscription model on both gamepass/playstation now without any purchasing options on any platforms will cripple developers. Let's face it subscription models will always and only be an option and not the main focus for a developer and platform. If xbox and/or playstation ever go purely subscription like Netflix without any hardware then I expect the quality of games to fall dramatically without getting revenue elsewhere.
But I suppose that future will never come to fruition.
@UltimateOtaku91 I disagree. We have seen in tv/movie circles shows and films exlusively on streaming services creators have felt freedom to take risks due to guaranteed income. Some of those risks have paid off massively. So going pure subscription hasnt been a bad thing.
I think it will be the same on gaming. Devs will receive a lump sum guaranteed. Could breed complacency sure, but I think that freedom to take risks knowing money is coming in regardless will empower devs not hinder them or put pressure on to rush through meidocre products.
@Jaxx420 imagine a gta in the future being on a streaming service only, not available to purchase fully anywhere, are you telling me xbox/playstation will give them the amount of money they would of got by actually selling their game? Look at gta 5 sold around 140 million copies making them billions, the physical sales and digital sales market is never going away as it brings in too much money for developers way more than just being on a subscription service would bring, that's why big third party developers don't leave their big games on gamepass/playstation now for very long
Simple economics:
Fortnite made $1.8 Billion in 2019 alone and it's free to play - that's just dlc, cosmetics, etc. All in a single year.
The future is base games via subscription with paid DLC, seasons passes, etc. - this 100% puts the power in the hands of consumers to decide what is worth playing vs not, what's fun vs not, and what has longevity vs not. I can't wait to play Dirt 6 on Game Pass as I've already 100% Dirt 5 after buying at launch. Worth the $60 I paid, even better on Game Pass .
Makes sense, it's actually a very fun game. Personally I always enjoyed the Dirt games over the Dirt Rally games even though I am usually a fan of sim racers. The Dirt Rally games are just too hardcore for my taste, it's one thing to have realistic physics but they really try to bring on the difficulty as well. That and Dirt Rally 2.0 really felt like a misstep with it's always online live services, it's like half the time just trying to navigate the menus give me issues due to server problems and it makes the whole in-game economy feel messed up.
Dirt 5 is just such a fun and pure game in comparison. I can just jump right into it and have fun playing the career mode or whatever I want to do really, no annoying live services, hardcore difficulty, or demanding economy to deal with. It's also just a pure old school arcade racer IMO, you don't even do any rally racing really, it's just all arcade style head to head racing in various off-road classes.
Personally I think this makes Dirt 4 and 5 a great combination as they feel like completely different games. Dirt 4 does a great job of making rally racing fun and accessible while definitely being focused around the rally racing, and Dirt 5 is just a fun arcade racer where you do just about everything besides rally racing.
@SegataSanshiro To me Dirt 5 and GRID (2019) feel like the perfect games for people who enjoyed classic Sega style arcade racers like Sega Rally, Daytona USA, and Sega Touring Car Championship. It's like if Sega kept developing their racers I imagine they would have felt a lot like those two games.
It's like I love sim racers, don't get me wrong, but I grew up playing arcade racers and I always have a blast playing them. It also seems like we don't get that many great arcade racers these days, so many of them are indies that go for that whole retro vibe. Outside of NFS which is pretty much it's own thing, it's just these two games that really standout to me when it comes to AAA efforts with real cars.
Gamepass is gonna completely take over gaming..
@SegataSanshiro 100% agree on Minecraft Dungeons. I bought every last DLC for it so far and absolutely love it. Would I have risked $39.99 or more on it without trying it first via Game Pass? No way. I feel the same way about Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2. MS has made more from me on all of these games by distributing via Game Pass than they ever would have otherwise.
@UltimateOtaku91
“imagine a gta in the future being on a streaming service only, not available to purchase fully anywhere”
This is exactly why Microsoft doesn’t like Gamepass to be called Netflix of gaming. Software licences work fully different from movie DRMs. One can always permanently own the license for future preservation (atleast until the CMOS battery runs out).
@SegataSanshiro Yeah I absolutely adored the old Project Gotham games, some of my fondest memories playing Xbox 360 and gaming online were with PGR3, and I still enjoyed PGR4 even though it wasn't as impressive. I would just love to play PGR3 again, right up there with Test Drive Unlimited 1 and 2 among my favorite games of that 360 generation.
Good to hear, but not quite sure why it's shocking. A game in a long running series becomes essentially free. Obviously the amount of people playing it would go up a good amount.
Possibly my favorite current game. I truly enjoy it.
@JayJ spot on.
Speaking of GamePass. Dragon Quest Builders 2 just discovered as coming to Xbox and GP on May 4th!!!

@awp69 Such a great news. I'm completing this game in Switch right now. I'm glad to see this coming to Game Pass.
@Krzzystuff Well they have to release a decent game because if no one will play it, no one will buy dlc. But I can see games released in episodes like Final Fantasy VII Remake.
I purchased this on launch great game
I bought for £3!! Its well hard but brilliant and worth the money!
